Saving Notre Dame: Mary Ann Glendon, Our Lady's "secret weapon"?
Renew America ^ | 04-06-09 | Tom O'Toole

"So do you think this is the photo Nancy Pelosi taped her head over to prove she saw the Pope?" my wife kidded me about this article's picture of Pope Benedict XVI and Mary Ann Glendon, former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican and current Harvard law professor, not to mention this year's recipient of the University of Notre Dame's Laetare Medal, ND's highest award for Catholics. While her picture with the Pope is proof that Professor Glendon, dubbed "the pro-life feminist" by the secular press, was, unlike Pelosi (whom His Holiness resolutely refused to grant even the briefest photo-op to, lest it be construed as acceptance of the speaker's heretical Catholic stances and thus lead to scandal), in good standing with the Holy See, does that mean she will stand up for the Faith when she takes the stage almost immediately before Obama during next month's controversial commencement at Notre Dame?

There were no pictures or video of that event. The pope wouldn’t allow it!

The Pope finessed her—plain and simple. God bless the Pope.

I don’t believe that she was expecting it to go that way, neither. Often pride won’t let a person know when they have been trumped.

Promised hubby I’d post this White House No. for those of us who are against FOCA and all it entails. The number is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

202-456-1111.

Call and register your message to the POTUS now. We have to stop the Congress from passing the law stating there is no out for “conscientious objection” to the provision of abortion. If it passes it will leave our physicians and hospitals with no other choice than “civil disobedience” and that surely won’t turn out well.

Pictures surfaced in the media, likely from prior meetings, but that does not matter.

For all the rest of the world knew, including the casual Catholics who need it most, Pelosi was not admonished by the Pope.

And who are you to be criticizing the Holy Father?

The Pope is concerned with Nancy Pelosi's soul, not politics. He is not concerned about what the media MAKES UP, nor what ignorant people infer based on things over which he has no control.

The Pope is also a head of state. In that capacity, he must meet with dignitaries from foreign governments. That has included people like Tarik Aziz of Iraq, Bill Clinton, and Prince Charles, none of whom are a model of moral rectitude. I don't believe that anyone thinks that either Pope Benedict or Pope John Paul endorsed any of these people's numerous sins.

I suggest that you think and pray about your attitude during this week.

“The Pope is concerned with Nancy Pelosi’s soul, not politics.”

###

You are responding as an informed, devout and interested Catholic. Although I am also of that camp, I am taking the substantially less informed perspective of the world at large and the casual Catholic, both of whom will only view these events on a somewhat superficial level. That is a significant difference.

Ask your not-so-devout Catholic friends what they know about Pelosi’s audience with the Holy Father.

Like it or not, while the Pope is rightly primarily concerned with Pelosi’s soul, his public actions do have significant consequences for the health of The Church.

The Church of which he is the Shepard is facing serious problems largely because of a failure of leadership, and in this case a failure to make a public demonstration of the primacy with which it views the issue of abortion.

Whom am I to question? You and I obviously differ on the theological implications of the duality of the Holy Father’s infallability.

Since we do not know all the things the Holy Father might be concerned with, a little charity would be in order.

For example, what would be the ramifications of the Pope singling out Nancy Pelosi and publicly attacking her? I don't know, but those are things popes have to be concerned with. I am certain he isn't wanting a dual church system set up here, like they have in China. I think it quite likely the democrats might try to do that. A government approved church for the CINO's and those loyal to the Faith having to attend masses in homes in secret.

As far as those who aren't faithful or even Catholics, it wouldn't matter if he did publicly chastise her. No one would know, because the press wouldn't cover it and would just publish old photos anyway.

The problem we have in this country is the press. They twist things and ignore things until most of the public hasn't the least idea of what's going on. I prefer that the Pope not make futile gestures for photo ops, since they would be ignored anyway. It's better that he met her in private and no doubt told her where she is wrong. It make take a while to sink into her little pea brain, but I have confidence in the Holy Spirit.

I agree with your post.

Very little is accomplished by on-going fault-finding with the Pope.

And he can’t be expected to have personal control of millions under his care. That is why we are obligated to pray for him at every Mass, which we do—even if it is ever so carelessly and thoughtlessly done, it still remains in our liturgical prayers to pray for him. He is on a veritable “via crucis” and he needs all the Simons of Cyrene and Veronicas that there are to bear the Cross with him.

God bless this Pope—this man at the most difficult hour in human history.

>> Sorry, but the perception of the majority of the world, is that Pelosi visited the Pope and he did nothing to address her full scale support of abortion, while calling herself a Catholic. <<

Really?

Pope Benedict Strongly Rebukes Pelosi Over Abortion

>> Yeah, sure no POSED photo-op. There were pictures and video of the Holy Father greeting Her Heinousness. <<

I entered "Pelosi Benedict" in Google's image search, and didn't see any pictures of him greeting her in Rome. The closest was a picture of her bowing to him in President Bush's rose garden reception. I went through several hundred pictures. Not one of her in Rome with Benedict. If there are any such pictures, they were not widely published.
