Abortion-rights opponents hope to use a delay in Kathleen Sebeliuss confirmation as secretary of Health and Human Services to push lawmakers to take a tougher stand against her, the Hill reports.
Abortion foes have already been lobbying against Sebelius because of her record on the issue, but they havent had much traction so far. The groups are frustrated that Republican senators didnt question Sebelius about her abortion stance or tax issues during confirmation hearings last week, the Hill says.
Majorie Dannenfelser, president of the antiabortion Susan B. Anthony List, called Republicans silence appalling in an interview with the publication. (See the groups list of questions for Sebelius.) Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America, called it baffling and said senators were being negligent.
Sebeliuss nomination shifted to the slow track after Republicans asked the Senate Finance Committee to defer its vote. Abortion opponents are trying to take advantage of Congresss two-week spring break by peppering congressional district offices with concerns over the issue.
Its not clear how much traction theyll have, as Sebelius appears to be on track toward confirmation. Obama administration officials have also said any person chosen to lead HHS in the Obama administration will be a supporter of abortion rights.

It’s not so baffling. They don’t want to have to fight for a Senate seat in Kansas when the money can be spent elsewhere.
Abortion like illegal immigration and gaydoomness is no longer a litmus test to being a GOPer.
Guns are the only issue left.
“Abortion-rights opponents”
Pro-Life advocates. Its disgusting that a “conservative” newspaper like the Wall-Street Journal would use the language of the Left.
At least Coburn had the guts to put the brakes on her nomination.
I find the whole damn Republican party baffling.
Only one GOP Senator had the cohones to put her nomination on ice for two weeks.
The WSJ is not a conservative paper.
What would opposing Sebelius accomplish? Obama would just move on to the next pro-abortion radical. Obama will have a pro-abortion HHS so it might as well be Sebelius. Atleast then, she won’t be in the Senate come 2011.
Not much difference between Congressional Republicans and Democrats these days. We need a new party or kick the Rhino’s out.
Exactly.
No wonder we are losing the debate.
I am not the only one who noticed that apparently.
I let my “Senator” Grassley know how I felt about that...have yet to get a response back...which may indeed be a response.
What! Also why is Kansas broke? Is she gov of KS or Iowa? Another Granholm who has helped destroy Michigan.
Did anyone catch Old Bob Dole’s (and he is looking very old) on CSpan pitching for this rotten Gov? That he was pitching her for the job because he and Daschle and a couple others of sim status in a little study club of 4-5 think this madwoman just duckie?
Its hard to stack KS and IA in the Liberal column, but there you are...
Personally speaking, I'm OK with the "anti-abortionist" label. For years, I've been labelled "pro-life," and continually have had to defend my stance in favor of capital punishment. Don't get me wrong here. The argument is still a tough row to hoe for those whose who think in terms of moral relativity.
