Unless I miss my guess, those MERSHIPS are minimally manned in addition to being unarmed. JJM?

I deal with a lot of over the road truckers at work.

Many, if not most, of the good ones are armed.

Had quite a few gun chats over coffee with some of them.

Many ships have 18-21 crewmembers on board. European ships can have less, little as 12 from what I’ve read.

I sailed over a decade ago, but one captain I worked for had “black” weapons onboard for pirates. Just civilian rifles and pistols, no crew-served weapons, but he was a really old salt hawspiper who didn’t give hoot what the company thought.

Hi Chief,

Yes, there are definitely many toys in the engine room that could be used as a weapon. I believe this ship is diesel, but on a steamship, a burner barrel could ruin your whole day.

Topsail: Formerly 3rd A/E, Double barrel, unlimited HP.

Seriously, what would any American - I hope - have done in light of what happened on 9/11?

What if this was an AQ or other terrorist engineered attack and these captives were going to be murdered in any case?

Would you take that chance as a helpless captive or would you have done the "Lets roll" thing? - A real question.
I hope that this crew had thought out contingency plans beforehand.
All the better.

>What belief do the pirates have in common with the zero?

100 bucks says that they are muslims.
A thousand says that Hussein is one.

"... Our son deploys on a DDG in a few weeks for 6 months and my poor daughter in law is a wreck this morning thinking that pirates may board a DDG"

A destroyer would shred a pirate speedboat 2500 yards out with even their smallest gun.

Blow it to pieces, absolutely guaranteed.

JJ - I stand corrrected then, and have learned my requisite knowledge for the day. Must be similar to the “Bull” or “George” ensigns on Navy ships. Still call the middies, middies though. Cool.

Milford - Gotta take our shots when we can get’em in. Especially since they haven’t been playing football for something like a decade - at least not during our games with em ;)

Fair winds, Following seas
And yes - God bless em all

CNBC just said the pirates have the Captain. This will be Obama’s chance to shine. Pay off the Pirates and scold the crew for fighting back.

I feel bad for her. I’m a reservist and probably will deploy in January. Thinking about my wife and how she’ll handle things. She’s a trooper, but I think that in some regards it’s harder on the wives. :(

He he. We had school board elections in Missouri yesterday, and as I was researching candidates I learned that one of them was on a committee for “teaching as advocacy for social justice.” I know what that means - no thanks! No wonder are childrens isn’t learning.

Obama will prove now once and for all what an appeaser he is. The rest of the world will love him for it when he pays the pirates.Maybe Obama is on his way there now to personally pay them off for a photo op since the Somali’s are poor probably because of America.

I'm very glad they were able to regain control from the pirates. Though, it's difficult to say for sure what might have happened otherwise. These Somali pirates do not have a reputation for killing or hurting their hostages. Partly, I'm sure because they'd rather not have crews fighting back so much.

There's a whole cottage industry that's sprung up in ports in Somalia, providing services and catering and such for all of the hostage ships that they have at any one time. So... chances are better than average that these crews won't be hurt. But since the standard response by shipping companies is to just pay off the ransom, it just encourages more and more piracy. As it is, piracy over there is a low-risk high-reward industry. We need to change that.

The right answer, IMHO, is to fight back-- take the pirates on and inflict some casualties. Make piracy a very risky business, and there will be a lot less of it.
