Easy Access: $5,000 and One Hour Buys 10 Guns

in Richmond, Va. -- one of hundreds held every weekend across the state of Virginia and the country. We gave Samaha $5,000 and one hour to see how many guns he could buy, and how many questions he would be asked.

For Samaha, the Glock handgun was a particularly painful purchase. It was the same kind of gun used to kill his sister Reema when she was a freshman at Virginia Tech. Just holding the gun in his hand was difficult. < snip > Samaha walked back into the gun show, and within minutes he was out again, this time carrying a Colt AR 15, a semi-automatic assault weapon very similar to an M16. We asked if there were any questions asked.

Over the course of the hour, Samaha purchased 10 guns: three rifles, four shotguns, one handgun. He could have purchased many more handguns, but he wanted to abide by Virginia State law, which allows the purchase of one handgun per month, and two assault weapons.

Gun rights groups don't want to see the loophole closed because they fear that background checks will hurt business at gun shows, and also threaten privacy rights. They also argue that the Virginia Tech shooter didn't buy his gun at a gun show. < snip >

Even though Samaha immediately turned in all the weapons he bought at the gun show to the Richmond Police Department, Nunziato pointed out that if Samaha had wanted to, he could have caused a lot of damage with the guns he purchased.

"There were three or four police cars in the parking lot [at the gun show]. None of them could have stopped him [Samaha] with the firepower he bought," said Nunziato.

That’s their terminology for “private sale”, and that’s my point.

'If he filled out a 4473 for any of these purchases, was ABC involved in a "straw purchase?"'

Yes, but only if he bought from an FFL. If it was a private sale, then I imagine no paper was exchanged (like private sales here in Florida).

Like I said, "loophole" is LeftSpeak for "freedom". God forbid that a firearm could be traded or sold like any other tool, such as a shovel. After all, guns radiate that evil, mystic force that turns peaceful people into murderous banshees, dont'cha know.

I miss the good old days of blowing up GMC pickups with explosives for “journalistic purposes”.

Give me $5k and an hour I will either buy ONE gun — a Barrett .50 — or I’ll leave Mitch’s Gun Shop with only 3 or 4 guns and a trunkload of ammo for them. And Mitch standing in the driveway smiling widely and waving after helping me load everything up.

Actually, I would probably leave with the last 2 guns I feel like I “need” to finish my armory and that trunkload of ammo and accessories — and probably $2000 in my pocket to buy CDBEAR something shiny to wear when we go shooting.

he sent Bloomberg a letter telling him to stop the straw purchases because it was against the law and violators would be prosecuted.

Excellent, Jay Wallace the owner of Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, Ga still has an active lawsuit against bloomberg, he says he will go out of business before he gives up!

“One will note that, in the Orwellian lexicon of the political left, “loophole” = “freedom”.”

Yes, and they are shouting “You can buy something that is Constitutionally protected without government permission! The horror! The horror!!

Absolute wimps and idiots.

I remember one laughably hyperbolic British news article about finding an illegal revolver and “six cartridges” in someone’s flat. Then the reporter went on about the “six deaths that were prevented” that day. Every single bullet is a murder waiting to happen. That is how they think.

I really hate liberals who believe that if the government is given enough power and control, we could all be nice, safe slaves.

How much damage could be caused
with a car or truck for the same money?

How vacuous !

Thankfully the comments over there are almost entirely good. These sons of bitches freedom haters can’t get away with their agenda as easily as they did in the 90’s.

It’s really sad that ABC (and michael moore before them) exploit these useful idiots for their agenda. I suppose if his sister died from a car accident, he’d never drive again either? Maybe they’d give him money to buy 10 cars in a day?

ABC thinks they’ve uncovered some scandal that nobody’s heard of. Idiots all.
