McCain backs Obama's call to end nuclear weapons

TOKYO (AFP) — US Senator John McCain Friday backed a call by President Barack Obama, his former rival for the White House, for a planet free of nuclear weapons and this should start with North Korea and Iran.

The Republican senator from Arizona was speaking in Japan on the last leg of an Asia tour, after Tokyo was angered by Pyongyang firing a rocket over its territory Sunday.

"Concerning President Obama's commitment to the removal of nuclear weapons from the Earth, I certainly support that ambitious goal," McCain told a Tokyo press conference.

I'm not usually one to defend that hump McCain, but I think he may have been "agreeing" with Obama facetiously.

He speaks of the "ambitious goal" of a nuclear weapons free world, but then directly addresses the real problem - tyrannical regimes with nuclear weapons.

"Concerning President Obama's commitment to the removal of nuclear weapons from the Earth, I certainly support that ambitious goal. We have two countries in the world that could destabilise both parts of the world -- the Iranians and the North Koreans. They both are on the path to acquiring nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them...
the North Korean launch was a direct violation of the UN Security Council resolutions and against the norms of decent behaviour as a citizen of the world...
Iranians risk a destabilisation of the entire Middle East as they continue on their path to acquire nuclear weapons."

Of course, I could be wrong, but in this case, I read McCain's "agreement" as something much more dismissive of the silly idea.

It’s not a secret around here that McCain is another poster boy for Testosterone Replacement Therapy.

The GOP has so many of them, I dont know why Michael Steele doesn’t make a deal with the drug companies already.

And this is the guy she busted her ass for during the campaign and what did she get for it, non stop media attacks and no support from her own running mate. The only reason why I wanted McCain to win was so that Sarah could be in the White House. McCain is the Republican version of Obama

Just earlier this week I told my husband that as bad as McCain would have been, at least he wouldn’t try to disarm us. Wow, guess I was wrong.

This is why the last election cycle ended the minute McCain won the primary. Not much difference between these two.

I wish McCain would put down the pooper scooper and quit following Obama (his seeming lord and master) around savoring every emission.

Can anyone tell me what the point of voting for this guy was, if he’s going to agree with Obama on every issue?

How pathetic to behold John McCain, desperate to stay relevant, as he slowly begins to realize his political career is over.

A pair of morons.

May I be first to call them the right and left buttocks.

Nuclear weapons have saved more people’s lives than they have ever killed.

Thank you for posting this. I don’t like John at all and frankly, I would just slam him for the one-sentence statement. You shed light on more of what was actually said, and I agree, he may have been making nice with 0 while pointing out the elephant in the living room.
Still, I wish he’d stop making nice. Be a Republican or just switch sides already. Or.... just leave. Yeah, leave...
