Be careful not to lump PETA with most mainstream humane societies. PETA has a weird notion of ridding animals of the burden of being subjugated to man no matter how kindly the animals may be treated.
You raise a good point, although the ranks of the ASPCA are quite full of people who think as I have outlined.
