Virgin Mary Statue Beheaded at Santa Monica Church

SANTA MONICA -- Police in Santa Monica are investigating the beheading of a statue of the Virgin Mary at a church there on Easter Sunday. The vandalism happened shortly before Easter services commenced at St. Monica Catholic Church.
A priest at the church found the 55-year-old marble statue headless around 5:45 a.m. The head was laying on the ground just a few feet away.
The statue stands in front of the church, on the corner of Seventh Street and California Avenue. The top of the statue was covered with a white plastic bag before Easter services began.
Police say they do not have any suspects, but they are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
"In this case, since the vandalism was of a very important figure within the Catholic religion, we’re classifying it and investigating it as a hate crime," said Santa Monica Police Lt. Darrell Lowe

No, it’s of the Virgin Mary. I know that place. Just takes half an hour from Hollywood. It’s mostly a rich, white LIB neighborhood. Just like my parish on Sunset, they sometimes insert snarky lib crap in their sermons like pray “for the end of the Iraq war” but it’s a nice dainty church. Im just surprised this made the news.

Vandalism really annoys me. Too many people treat it like a harnless activity. There is little respect for property anymore.
I erred. The statute in front of the Church is the Virgin Mary. The Statute of St. Monica (St. Augustine’s Mother) is at the end of Santa Monica Boulevard and Ocean Avenue
Beautiful statue from 1952 was damaged at a beautiful church from 1926. St. Monica’s is the home for many people in the movie industry.
Had this been done in a predominant Hispanic neighborhood, there would be riots against Gays.
With 7,000 households and upwards of 20,000 regular parishoners, St. Monica’s is much more than a “nice dainty church.” It is one of the most vibrant and active parishes in the entire archdiocese. Every Sunday Mass is packed - the 5:30 p.m. is always overflow - and on holidays, extra Masses are held in the gymnasium and auditorium to handle the overflow.
Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson, the pastor, is one of the most inspiring men of God I have ever met. A brilliant homilist, and an extraordinary guy.
What a shame for his church to suffer such desecration.
Pretend for a moment it was a representation of Muhammad (I know, that'd be blasphemous within Islam...but roll with it for a moment)...now would it be a hate crime?
There’s a gorgeous icon of St. Monica inside the church.
It’s funny, they say, “You can’t blame Islam for the actions of some Muslims. You can’t paint with a broad brush!” Yet, they indiscriminately attack Christianity either with vandalism or general mockery in the media/entertainment field.
