In Texas, 31% Say State Has Right to Secede From U.S., But 75% Opt To Stay
Rasmussen Reports ^

Posted on 04/17/2009 12:36:45 PM PDT by Scythian

Thirty-one percent (31%) of Texas voters say that their state has the right to secede from the United States and form an independent country.

However, the latest Rasmussen Reports poll in the state finds that if the matter was put to a vote, it wouldn’t even be close. Three-fourths (75%) of Lone Star State voters would opt to remain in the United States. Only 18% would vote to secede, and seven percent (7%) are not sure what they'd choose.

Thanks djsherin. From most accounts Rasmussen does a pretty decent job of polling but something doesn’t ring quite true about these numbers. Not saying they’re wrong necessarily but I’d sure like to get a look at his sample.

You, sir, I recognize as a left wing agitator on FR, better known as a troll.

Some points to remember:

Trolling a troll is not possible ... if you are responding to a troll to begin with, then the troll has served his/her purpose.

Calling a troll a troll is pointless; the troll already knows he/she is a troll.

Trolls like attention. A troll becomes more successful the more he/she receives attention.

And remember ...

Just because one's opinion is not the same as your own; does not mean one is a troll. The fun of a forum is to have discussions with like minded individuals .... Not to agree 100% with everything everyone says ...

Would you like me to cite the outcomes for the 11 states that left the Union back in 1861?

What will they do next time when the total is 35, or 40?

No more than 25% of Texans want to secede and a GOP candidate for president cannot win more than 25 states.

So therefore, I doubt that 35 or 40 states will leave the Union.

You can never tell. You don't know if they polled the only people around who want to stay in because they're on the dole.

this country is seriously divided and at some point, the ones who are paying the taxes are going to get fed up. You already have quite a few states that are reaffirming their sovereignty already, that should tell you something.

Trust me, we have sampling methodology down to a science, a close to exact science and this poll is accurate, just as most of the polls taken last fall before the election were accurate.

You are correct I think.

Facts are now subject to a majority opinion.

Next up, newtons laws of physics, 38% think they are still binding, 40% think they are oppresive and dated, 2% are still undecided. The other 20% are still taking a math class.

I just read the reference material on texas and it being able to be divided into 4 more states (4 states total). Well here’s the kicker...when it divides those states are NOT automatically made to be states...they have to be accepted to the union to be a state.

So what happens if they divide out the entire state and leave a very small part of the state as Texas and create the new territory as the territory of texas (not yet a state). So that area that is not yet a state will in effect not be part of the US until the US adopts it as a state. If they get enough states to agree to vote against accepting them in...then they could in fact be a separate nation.

Also the world opinion would matter if a state chose to secede. How can we tell Russia to let Georgia secede, but not one of our states who voted freely to leave the union they joined?

I’m not advocating it, but just saying it would make most of our foreign policy that much more difficult if we are fighting to keep our states as part of the union and fighting for other countries to allow states to leave their union.
