Indictments reveal prison crime world Officers, inmates charged in drugs, extortion

By Justin Fenton | justin.fenton@baltsun.com April 17, 2009 The court records read like a scene out of Goodfellas: From their prison cells and with the help of corrections staff, authorities say, members of a violent gang were feasting on salmon and shrimp, sipping Grey Goose vodka and puffing fine cigars - all while directing drug deals, extorting protection money from other inmates and arranging attacks on witnesses and rival gang members.

A seven-month investigation that included wiretaps on contraband prison cell phones led to the indictment on drug and weapons charges of 24 people - including four state prison officers - who authorities believe are leaders or associates of the Black Guerrilla Family prison gang, officials announced Thursday.

A search warrant outlines how gang members were able to obtain heroin, direct hits on enemies through so-called "Death Angels" and conduct cell phone conference calls to arrange business with inmates around the state.

"It's not enough just to catch the bad guys and get them convicted and sent to prison," said Maryland U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein. "We need to make sure that while they're in prison, they're isolated and not able to carry on and continue their gang activities."

More corrupt than Detroit and Philadelphia?

That’s pretty corrupt.

The left doesn’t want criminals to be in prison. They want criminals to be out in the world taking money that is “rightfully theirs” from those who worked hard for it.
Redistribution of wealth, democrat style.

My votes are on Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.

Baltimore is on the list, but it is by no means the worst.

Isn't Baltimore better now that Nancy Pelosi graduated and moved on to the House?

My votes are on Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.

The number one for corruption has to be Washington, DC - especially when the Senate and House are in session.

The Wire. Great show. Gives a scary look at B’more. But I wouldn’t say it’s the most corrupt. I’d say Chi-town has a lock on that title. But Philly and Detroit certainly aren’t slackers in the corruption department either.

It would be difficult to decide what city Democratic party machine is the most corrupt. They are all corrupt, even the one here in little old York, PA.

This just in - Gov. Ed Rendell considers this headline a personal affront. He has launched a $40 million ad campaign promoting Pennsylvania and SE PA in particular as the most corrupt.

‘Baltimore threw down the gauntlet and Pennsylvania must respond,’ said the governor.

Rendell said details would be forthcoming but pointed to a corruption pilot program already in place: ‘Look at the I-80 corridor. It was a federal Interstate freeway but we explored ways to make it a toll road. The tolls would go in our pockets and of course we would award the operation of the toll collections and the road contracts to the highest bidder. With that kind of transparent wheeling and dealing how can Baltimore make any sort of claim?’

“At one point in the recorded conversations, according to the documents, Smith, who is alleged to have had sex with inmates for money, says she is not worried about losing her job. “I got the [corrections officers’] union behind me,” she said.”

We have a winner.

The city has been a $hithole since the days of this bi+ch's Daddy - Mayor Tommy Boy D'Alesandro - shaking down anybody that wanted to do business in Bawlmer. She learned her lessons well.

I guess you could make an argument for any number of cities based on the dollar size of the corruption, or breadth of corruption across a city government, or depth within a particular government agency, but it’s probably safe to say Baltimore is representative of any number of cities across this once-great country...forty years of failed welfare and social policies have only spawned high unemployment, disintegration of the nuclear family, and massive crime and corruption...

I grew up in Bawlmer, love the O’s and the Ravens, but would never move back...

True dat! Sometimes I forget I'm watching actors. Definitely one of the grittiest of police dramas.

Baltiomore most corrupt city? I don’t know. It’s going to be pretty hard to pass Chicago, Detroit and New Orleans.
