BOAO, China (AP) - Action star Jackie Chan said Saturday he's not sure if a free society is a good thing for China and that he's starting to think "we Chinese need to be controlled."
Chan's comments drew applause from a predominantly Chinese audience of business leaders in China's southern island province of Hainan.
The 55-year-old Hong Kong actor was participating in a panel at the annual Boao Forum when he was asked to discuss censorship and restrictions on filmmakers in China. He expanded his comments to include society.

This is a leftwing mentality. Its also a slave mentality.
I am sure the idea of freedom scared many slaves.... and its also called the Stockholm Syndrome these days isn’t it??
am very sad to hear him say that...after making a fortune in the land of the free.
Surprised? While he’s made some ok movies he’s obviously a favorite of the Chinese govt. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been allowed to do what he’s done.
And its such a terrible thing to do what you want.
Stockholm Syndrome indeed. A few days back I read something about NK people feeling guilt being in SK land of abundance and of the free.
And closer to home...
Obama’s DHS: American people need to be controlled
Obama’s EPA: American people need to be controlled
Obama’s FCC: American people need to be controlled
In my dealings with the Chinese, all over Asia, over the last 40 years, I would say that a lot of Chinese would say the same thing. They prefer a benevolent dictator to all out democracy. Many of them say that the Chinese are so individualistic and need some outside discipline. Complex subject that I have discussed with Chinese in all types of situations..and degrees of freedom..from PRC, Taiwan, HKG and Singapore.
The take-away from this, which sadly most won’t take away from it, is Jackie Chan saying:
“We Chinese”.
That is the point. China. Hongkong. Taiwan. Overseas. Ethnic Chinese define themselves not by the government or system they live in. Most define themselves by ... race.
But of course, we won’t think about that, because it’s uncomfortable.
25% of the world’s population. Rich now beyond description from money America frittered away foolishly.
And ready to define the new world. By race.
Yet he says he’d buy a Japanese TV because a Chinese TV “might explode.”
The Chinese are the same way, with their pantheon of emperors and warlords ruling the country for thousands of years, before Mao moved into the role.
How many of these nations have had a genuine national experience of democracy, free speech, etc.?
(Only a very few.)
Find God, Jackie, and you will find freedom.
This is exactly what people say when you propose abolishing government schools, and abolishing other schools. People don’t believe that other people can handle freedom.
I’ve heard this logic from Chinese coworkers. “Chinese are so poor and uneducated, they need to have information selectively given to them.” I was amazed.
So actors everywhere think people care about their opinions?
The government of 2 Samuel 23:3 is the best: "The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God".
But lacking that (since sadly God fearing rulers/leaders are far and few between), the government defined by our Founding Fathers was probably the best devised in man's history: A limited Federal government, essentially ruling in the fear of the people (a well armed populace).
The problem is that man's governments eventually degrade into 'fearless' governments that exist only to feed and grow their own bureaucracies at the expense of freedom. These type of governments need to get neutered or they turn the people into slaves.
Chinese people are weird this way. seriously- i was married to one.. The way of thinking is entirely different I swear it has to be genetic.
Watch one of their chinese language movies and you will be very confused
Have you ever heard your Chinese coworkers use the term “lao wai”?
It would be in reference to another person.
“Lao wai”. Foreigner.
Ironically, you will very often hear Chinese in America, use the term to refer to non-Chinese. “Lao wai”.
Foreigner.
