Ammo shortage a concern for area (Read last line)
clarecountyreview ^ | 4/15/2009 | Pat Maurer

Posted on 04/19/2009 3:16:21 AM PDT by Red in Blue PA

The “buying frenzy” started after the election, said Jeff Poet of Jay’s Sporting Goods.

Gun owners are now finding it almost impossible to find automatic pistol cartridges, including semi automatic, 32 ACP, 380 auto, 9 mm and 40 caliber S & W.

Potential legislation suggested by the Obama administration that would reinstate the 1994 ten-year “Brady Bill” limiting ammunition magazines to a maximum of ten rounds, has customers “buying up supplies,” Poet said.

Before his election, President Barack Obama said, “My first priority will be to reinstate the assault weapons bans as soon as I take office. Within 90 days, we will go back after kitchen table dealers and work to end the gun show and internet sales loopholes. In the first year I intend to work with congress on a national no carry law, a one gun a month purchase limit and bans on all semi-automatic guns.”

“We started having a problem getting ammunition around the end of January,” Poet said. He added, “The current shortage is similar to the cycle in 1994 (when the Brady Bill was instituted under President Bill Clinton) when we sold out of high capacity weapons and ammunition.”

*************

Public concern is growing. Walter said “The NRA [National Rifle Association] has signed up more members since January than in all of 2008 and 2007 combined.”

More gun owners is the only way legislation can be stopped.

The US has plenty of gun owners. We need more gun owners who are also active in speaking up and guiding legislation. NRA etc. probably only have a couple percent of the gun owning populace.

That kinda runs afoul of the “...and bear arms” part of the Second Amendment, doesn’t it? How does he propose to achieve this without such legislation being deemed unconstitutional?

Probably the same way they did the National Firearms Act of '34, the Gun Control Act of '68, and the Assault Weapons ban of '94. All survived constitutional challenges. It's even worse now.

Ammo is available... you have to order it in and it can be very expensive... even .380 is around but it is not worth what it will cost you to get it into your hands. Other calibers... even the most popular... are available and affordable... but you must put an effort into locating it.

Just like the progressive liberal socialist did in 1994 when they enacted the “assault weapons ban” and not a single American challenged the Constitutionality of the law!

Keep your powder dry!

Pissed off because of prices I see. One can read the exact same screed on numerous gun sites. Some of us are buying ammo to be able to affordably shoot... something that I do every week on my own range. Prices will remain high and go higher until hussein leaves office and the economy has a reason to improve... that will be years coming.

Not at all. I'm a single woman. I get free ammo at the gun range. :D

ps: I click on gun sites maybe once a year, and never the forums. FR eats up all the time I have for keyboarding.

My son and I went to the Dixie Gun Show in Charlotte, NC yesterday.....He bought a AK-47 for $500 and we split a case of 1000 rds ($320.00) per case.
Plenty of ammo, but alas no .380.......7.62x39 was there but ranging from .32 per round to $1.00 per (not in the large amounts as in the past.
SKS and AK’s were a premium

FR does that to a person. I want every American that wants to arm him or herself, to do so. The gooberment does not have enough people or enough coffins to disarm 200 million Americans... and they never will. They can tax ammo etc and that is why many are buying up ammo in record quantities. Some are using it as an investment for profit. Now that is as American as Apple Pie and Capitalist to boot. You just need to come at this from a different viewpoint. I wish that I could get free ammo... and I own my range! :-)

$10 for a box of 20 at Pistols Plus, Osage Beach, MO. They also had Wolf brand (made in Russia) .223 for $8.50 for 20.
I've heard mixed reports on the Wolf product.

This article is badly written. I suspect that this is not a real quote from Obama, but a quote of the gun shop owner claiming what Obama said.

I googled some key phrases, and found that it is from an alarmist email that is entirely unverified. Essentially debunked.

Makes me distrust the quote about the NRA membership growth, too.

Disreputable journalism is annoying, even dangerous, even when it’s on our side.

Most online retailers will not backorder primers - there are none available. What’s worse is that they have no idea when (if) they will get more - it’s that bad.

The reason is undoubtedly that the primer makers are putting all those primers into ammunition that they can sell at a much higher profit. That, and they are selling them to the major ammo manufacturers instead of at retail.

“...we have to remember that bobama believes that the Constitution is a ‘living and breathing document’. To a Marxist, that means ‘arbitrary and lawless activism’. (page 37, ‘Liberty and Tyranny’ by Mark Levin) Great book btw!”

The Bamster is also on record as saying he believes the Constitution is “fundamentally flawed.”

In my area, the shortage started on Nov 5, 2008. Not very many here are very happy about NObama as President.

I went to the Bill Goodman Gun Show in Nashville yesterday. There was ammo available from a number of vendors in almost all calibers except for .380. I saw NO .380. One vendor had a 1,000 round case of 9 mm for $300.

This seems to be the case pretty much everywhere... My guess is that the same equipment can be used for .380 & 9mm, so the production has all been switched over to 9mm these days. Just a guess on my part, but I'll stick with it.

My local gunshops can only get shotgun primers: No pistol or rifle primers, and they're short on all other supplies too. And ammo? Short on .223 & .308, but they do have a fair amount of 7.62x39 & 7.62x54, but it's all surplus and corrosive, which is probably the reason it's still on the shelves. In fact, the only caliber that seems to be readily available around here (but still expensive) is .40S&W.
