What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961;

Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954;

Cincinnati, OH (3rd)....since 1984;

Cleveland, OH (4th)...since 1989;

Miami, FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor;

St. Louis , MO (6th)....since 1949;

El Paso, TX (7th) has never had a Republican mayor;

Milwaukee, WI (8th)..since 1908;

Philadelphia, PA (9th)...since 1952;

Newark, NJ (10th)....since 1907.

Well... maybe they’re all really low in crime? Maybe?

There can’t be a correlation between liberal social policies and human misery, because they’re all based on good intentions. Or making oneself feel virtuous, which is the same thing.

I have long observed that Democratic towns and union towns invariably have high crime rates, high rates of poverty, slums and dirty streets and run down buildings, lots of payday loan places, pawn shops and bailsbondsmen, lots of bars on their windows, strict gun laws and lots of class warfare.

It all goes together.

Republican towns tend to be quite the opposite, clean and well kept, much more integrated with few class distinctions, few businesses that prey on low income people and crime free by comparison. Republican towns tend to have many participants in conceal carry and have low crime rates. In Republican towns, the crimes like burglary, robbery, shoplifting and assault tend to be committed by people traveling thru or coming in from Democratic communities.

I recall watching election night coverage 10 years ago or so.

They had some prominent Dem on for a couple minutes cheerleading, I think from Minnesota but I’m no longer sure and it’s really not important, anyway the man said “We’ve got such and such precincts yet to count, and they’re some of the best looking ones you’ll ever see.”

Think about that for a second. I know as well as you do what kind of precincts he meant. The kind with a steel grate over every window.

The citizens of Washington DC got the right to elect their own mayor in the mid-70s. They proceeded to elect no one but RATS.

After 20 years of RAT rule, Congress had to establish a financial control board to deal with the mess.

The city is back in control, and the people continue to elect RATS. There has still not been a single GOP mayor.

This has been posted several times, and the data on the Mayors is incorrect in some places.

They came close to electing Carol Schwartz at one point (when she faced off against Marion Barry for his final term). Since DC has only had “Mayors” since 1967 and then not since 1871 and earlier (the last 3 Mayors at that point were Republicans). They had a Board of Commissioners from 1874-1967, which had GOP appointees concurrent with similar party Presidential Administrations.

What about - just for the sake of argument and perhaps some contrast - the 10 richest cities? No doubt these are strictly Republican and have been so for decades? Any correlation there or are we dealing with some variant of the post hoc, ergo propter hoc fallacy here?

42% for a Republican in DC (what she got in the ‘94 race) was remarkable.

She got a third of the vote, probably depressingly close to the percentage of the nonblack population at the time.

That's what she got back in 1986 (and in a Barry-free race in '98). Her 42% in '94 was astonishing. But I recall seeing some polling data at the time that indicated Barry had about as close to 100% disapproval from non-Black participants and a decent chunk of Blacks. By all accounts, she should've won, but there are far too many racist Black voters that would put race ahead of competence and a lot of so-called leaders that whip up hysteria at the prospect of Whites winning office. When non-Blacks won a majority on the City Council, that sent many into full-blown terror, as if slavery was making a comeback (scarcely realizing that they're already slaves voting for the party and ideology they knee-jerkly adhere to).
