In semi-rural Hidalgo County which lies to the north of the Rio Grande River separating Texas and Mexico, Sheriff Guadalupe Trevino reckons that there are about two dozen hardcore gangs operating -- a staggering number for a county with about 750,000 people.
"We have a serious gang problem here and have for a long time ... I believe we have more gangs than any other county on the border," Trevino told Reuters.
The extent of the problem -- the gangs often keep their fighting among themselves -- is hard to comprehend driving past citrus orchards or down the busy roads leading to the border. Some of the towns here are among the safest in the country.
But driving in poor, run-down neighborhoods in an unmarked SUV, heavily armed members of Trevino's elite gang enforcement unit point out gang graffiti scrawled on the sides of ramshackle homes. "Brown Pride" and "Tri-City Bombers" are among the many gangs competing for local turf. ....
Gangs and their culture of violence, drugs and crime are one of America's pressing social ills. But in the borderlands the problem has an urgency that has federal investigators worried.
"In the United States the local gangs play a major role in the distribution of the drugs brought in from Mexico. In southern California there has been significant cooperation between the drug cartels and the gangs there," said Matthew J. Desarno, acting unit chief of the Safe Streets and Gang Unit at Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters.
"We believe that the gangs in Texas are following that (southern California) model to establish links with the cartels to expand their own business operations ... Gang members will do what is profitable," he told Reuters by phone.

I was just telling the wife today that this scourge is only going to keep growing until sane adults implement the required degree of force to stop it.

Form them into work gangs to build the fence that we will throw them back over when it’s done.
Have them supervised and assisted by the owners of construction and contracting companies that think it’s ok to employ this vermin. (They got the experience at building stuff...right?)
Have it all managed and directed by old East German border guards. I’m shure that they would be more that willing to consult for a fee. After all.... they ran a very effective fence for 40 some odd years.

We have a horrible gang problem here in Georgia as well. I live in Gwinnett County, now considered a gang capital. Believe me, they do not hide, they are proud of themselves, yet there they are. We have a gang task force but I have yet to figure out what they do. Common sense would tell you to go into their neighborhoods and arrest every single one of them but that does not happen. They breed like roaches too.
The street gangs originated in the US and were then exported to Latin America.
Yeah, but it is the “extremist” you really have to watch out for!

Gang violence is on the rise in Medford.[Oregon]
In this week’s Crimestoppers, we take a closer look at the growing gang problem in this area.
Police have arrested six people associated with three gang attacks in just the past few weeks.
The most recent attack, police say, three teenagers beat up a 29-year-old father from Ashland while he was eating with his wife and child at the food court in the mall on Saturday.
Gangs have been in the area for years, but now some say the gang members are getting more dangerous and reaching new levels of violence.
Police say four gang members jumped a 16-year-old in Medford late last month, severely fracturing his jaw.
Police say this local highschoolers’ been hit by a gang before.
Matt Sweeney works with incarcerated youth gang members and those trying to get out.
“We’re being invaded,” he says.
