WASHINGTON The Obama administration is asking the Supreme Court to overrule long-standing law that stops police from initiating questions unless a defendant's lawyer is present, another stark example of the White House seeking to limit rather than expand rights.
The administration's action and several others have disappointed civil rights and civil liberties groups that expected President Barack Obama to reverse the policies of his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush, after the Democrat's call for change during the 2008 campaign.
At the same time, the administration acknowledges that the decision "only occasionally prevents federal prosecutors from obtaining appropriate convictions."
The administration's legal move is a reminder that Obama, who has moved from campaigning to governing, now speaks for federal prosecutors.
The administration's position assumes a level playing field, with equally savvy police and criminal suspects, lawyers on the other side of the case said.
Eleven states also are echoing the administration's call to overrule the 1986 case.

Where is Keith Olbermann foaming at his mouth about “hay bee ass corpse us”!
Torture?
Obama has a long way to go to get in Clinton’s class. I don’t think there was any part of the bill of rights that Clinton didn’t try to dismantle or get around.
Actually he is still campaigning, while also "ruling".
Dimwits wanted "Change". This is it!
Let the po po ask all they want just don’t say nuthin. Don’t worry, it will considered torture for the po po to turn out the lights and put a caterpillar in the cell. They will have to feed you coq au vin and supply a feather bed while you exercise your right to remain silent.
The revolution has already started. It started way back in 1994 when we threw the Rats out of Congress. They learned their lesson well and know that America will not willingly accept their agenda so they seek to undermine the protections against a coercive government and to label all political opposition as “terrorists”.
What they are wanting to do to Bush and Cheney and the CIA and anyone who opposes them is EXACTLY what totalitarian regimes in third world countries do. The Dept of Homeland Security is already watching who is buying ammo and actually questioned one man about why he thought he needed 1000 round of 223.
Must have something to do with the Ayers, conservative, extermination program that Pelosi is working on.
Not sure I’m seeing the cause of this.
There has to be something that their collective eye is focused on.
will the DUmmies scream about this loss of civil rights??
The next step will be to make it legal for police to shoot a runner who fails “to stop in the name of the law”.
You run, you get shot
I’ll give you one guess.
Communism doesn’t allow for lawyers to be present.
That’s where this is headed!
Wow, I’m really quite stunned to see this. I’d expect this from Medvedev or Putin, not Obama. Hey Obama, there’s quite a few of your poorer brothers who rely on that protection not to get hustled by some cracker cop who thinks he just caught himself a big fish. You might want to think about them for a minute.
They'll just parrot whatever the MSM and Obama feeds them... they're not capable of rational thought on their own.
Yeah, under Bush the fed can waterboard three al Qaeda types and monitor foreign phone calls and it's the end of the Constitution as we know it. But now watch Obama trample all over the constraints against self-incrimination - a far more drastic impact on Americans - and the same talking head hacks will give it the silent treatment.
I actually don’t see a problem with this. After all you still have “The right to remain silent” don’t you?
It won’t happen.
