LAST week began with President Asif Zardari signing a bill that effectively legalises the hand-over of a portion of Pakistan to a branch of the Taliban...
The very same day, Maulana Abdul Aziz returned in triumph to his favourite haunt, Islamabads Lal Masjid, where he appeared to claim at least some of the credit for the outcome in Swat and promised that a similar fate lay in store for the country as a whole and for the rest of the world...
There appears to be a relatively simple explanation for the ANPs nervousness: it is very, very scared of the Taliban and their allies. Which says a lot about the state of affairs in the NWFP. If the once progressive partys leading role in negotiating a highly reactionary deal in Swat is based on the assumption that a concession in Swat will allow the provincial government more breathing space elsewhere, then it clearly does not understand the Islamist mentality...
The government, according to a report in The Guardian at the weekend, is urging foreign embassies to move into a diplomatic enclave that may soon resemble Baghdads green zone. Almost everyone acknowledges, however, that adequate precautions against suicide bombers are hardly feasible. The vulnerabilities of Lahore and Karachi to say nothing of Quetta and Peshawar have already been demonstrated, while the likes of Baitullah Mehsud are free to hold press conferences, evidently with little fear of interception...
If the centre cannot hold, things will inevitably fall apart. Every now and then the odd flicker of hope can be glimpsed, but chances of redemption are fading fast. Once India concludes its drawn-out electoral process, it might be well-advised to make contingency arrangements for a wave of refugees driven by Islamist anarchy.

Lovely. And we have the Coward-Appeaser-in-Chief in the White House.
What do you bet that 0bama is busy making weekend plans (that involve AF One) with Michelle ?

They should get everybody out now, because the end-game will play out very quickly.
There will be no "defensible zone" if the Taliban get to the capital. They will launch mortar and rocket attacks on any such "zone". And anybody who waits until the last minute will experience a scene like the fall of Saigon.
Anything less will ensure the destruction of the West and the assimilation of all of Western Asia under Al Queda/Taliban.
It's an existential threat to at least 30 countries near-term, and the rest of civilization in the long-term.
I wonder how Nukes under Taliban control would factor into Israeli plans for Iran ?
A joint IsraeliIranianIndoUS campaign against Pakistan?
After all the Iranians hate the Talibs who slaughtered dozens of their diplomats and dignitiaries back when.....
My head is exploding!
Talk about thinking outside the box!
Strikes me as similar to our strategy during WWII, and pays repect to the Middle Eastern adage: the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Well, and perhaps the Chinese can help in stopgapping the Karokaram highway to ensure no jihadis escape into Xinjiang....
>>My head is exploding!
Save that for the jihadis, I know you haven’t turned into bomb and burka wearing babe....
Three days before Case White, the invasion of Poland... And our Dear Leader is out of town for the weekend...
Any other wannabe world power that you think should get involved ?
This would be an opportunity to try out all their "toys."
No, but I might consider wearing one and carrying a shiv...
“Three days before Case White, the invasion of Poland... And our Dear Leader is out of town for the weekend...”
