CDC says too late to contain U.S. flu outbreak

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday it was too late to contain the swine flu outbreak in the United States.

CDC acting director Dr. Richard Besser told reporters in a telephone briefing it was likely too late to try to contain the outbreak, by vaccinating, treating or isolating people.

"There are things that we see that suggest that containment is not very likely," he said.

He said the U.S. cases and Mexican cases are likely the same virus. "So far the genetic elements that we have looked at are the same." But Besser said it was unclear why the virus was causing so many deaths in deaths in Mexico and such mild disease in the United States.

Stocking up on food is a good idea. I keep telling myself I should do it, but maybe this time I will actually get out there and do it. This does sound potentially serious.

Well, you offered it up as something maybe someone should read. I find that normally FReepers have good taste in books, so I looked it up. I take you at your word that the book is much better than what I posted, but you can imagine my skepticism after reading that review! I tend to avoid books with hokie sex scenes and “evil right wing businessmen.” Sorry to jump the gun on ya.

Close the damn border for the duration of the epidemic.

They stocked up on that Tamiflu, you know something had to come along. I wonder if there was a major outbreak if they would have Tamiflu drug commercials and show people dropping dead left and right in the back ground.

It’s entirely possible it originated somewhere else, like East Asia, where the overwhelming majority of influenza epidemics have begun. With air travel it’s incredibly difficult to pin down precisely where a given mutation began.

Oh my gosh, get this quote from the FoxNews story:

But there is no reason to avoid Mexico, CDC and the WHO said. "CDC is not recommending any additional recommendations for travelers to California, Texas and Mexico," Besser said.

I give up, what does it take for our government to actually say "Avoid Mexico" !!!!!

I heard a local report that it had genes from human, bird, and swine flu. How does such a thing occur? Is this Bio terror?

This is nothing unusual for influenza. It's constantly mutating, moving to different hosts, picking up genes from each.

Given that this has happened dozens of times before naturally, there's no particular reason for this to have bene bio terror.

I've noticed on all portions of the political spectrum people have a difficult time believing anything really bad can happen without a human cause, though.

Availability of medical care?

Severity lessens with human to human transmission like some of those African viruses. (Ebola I think?)

They are skittish because of their response to something similar in 1976 (I think), where they saw a potential pandemic and released a vaccine that was bad and hurt a bunch of people.

What was that?

Time to send the National Guard to the border, now, in large enough numbers to stop the flow of illegal entrants.

Mexicans and OTMs that are in Mexico are now hearing that people who get swine flu in Mexico are dying in greater numbers than in the good old US of A; so there is bound to be a crapload of them now freaking out and fleeing to our medical facilities to be "saved" from the disease.

But how many people in the US will they infect while on their trek to the free hospital care we will give them?

When will the idiots in DC realize that our wide open borders are setting us up for a national emergency/terrorist attack; medical or otherwise?
