CDC says too late to contain U.S. flu outbreak

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday it was too late to contain the swine flu outbreak in the United States.

CDC acting director Dr. Richard Besser told reporters in a telephone briefing it was likely too late to try to contain the outbreak, by vaccinating, treating or isolating people.

"There are things that we see that suggest that containment is not very likely," he said.

He said the U.S. cases and Mexican cases are likely the same virus. "So far the genetic elements that we have looked at are the same." But Besser said it was unclear why the virus was causing so many deaths in deaths in Mexico and such mild disease in the United States.

You are on the money it has all the traits of a cytokine storm.

For all who want to know more...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytokine_storm

Also I finshed a few weeks ago a GREAT book called, “The Great Influenza”...it tells of how the United States in the late 1800s to early 1900 prior to the 1918 Pandemic how we had little or no research...how Juhns Hopkins was founded...who the leading researchers were...and how Woodrow Wilson and his PATHETIC poor leadership allowed the pandemic to travel around the world with his LACK of action.

I am not a person who enjoys history however this book was so fascinating on so many levels.

What the world will soon learn if this does become a pandemic on the same level as 1918...is that many people litterally got sick in the morning and died before evening.

Since 1918 we have learned much about the cytokine storm and how it doubles up with a virus of this type and can kill a healthy adult in a mtter of 8 to 12 hours.

I also think the sudden visit with Mexico a few days back was no coincidence...I think the US already had news from WHO of the outbreak in other smaller countries in Central America...

If you are interested in history of pandemics...read this link and consider reading the book by Barry.

Older people who had had the actual flu or a vaccine still showed anti-bodies to various strains of the flu...

My mother had the 1918 flu when she was 3 years old. I have never had a flu infection, and maintain that I got a powerful immunity from her milk. It seems like I have a master immunity to all the subdivisions/mutations that have occurred since 1918.

Thanks for that report. Ping to #244 re 0bama having direct contact with one fatality from this flu. Reportedly, anyway. I have nothing to verify that. Maybe your source can confirm or refute.

I have had a “flu” upper resp. virus going on 6 weeks. Also had a stomach “bug” at the beginning of all it.
I went to the ER in Raleigh, NC while on “vacation”-went to take care of my sick-er sister (help w/the kids) and the nurse told me that they had been swamped with people with a very nasty URI; he had it as well. And they didn’t know what it was because it was stomach & respiratory. Some people had the stomach part real bad, then the respiratory symptoms weren’t as bad and some people had it the opposite way (like me). He said with him, the fatigue was the worst part. So we compared symptoms and I opted to just go home without lab work etc. because they were so busy and they really couldn’t do anything for me. That was Easter Saturday.

So,I think it is more widespread than they know-due to under-reporting. I think I have or had it. I have NEVER been this sick in my life; my dr can’t believe how it’s morphed from my throat, to sinuses, ears and finally chest. Every week it has attacked, and I mean attacked a new area.

I live in CT and some nursing homes were closed to visitors etc. due to patient illness. Not sure if that’s connected, but I think it’s more widespread than we know.

Why not as an act of ‘charity’ have hospitals built in Mexico that way they will swamp those.

My comments about looking into curcumin as a sublingual (a liquid that you put beneath your tongue to be absorbed into the bloodstream), as well as about Maritime pine bark extract, were prompted by that link being posted earlier. It’s good research, and a good list. Not exhaustive, but they hit the ones most thoroughly backed by medical research, which can be somewhat sketchy at times on herbals.

If anyone wants to jump into this without much familiarity, I’d advise looking into any potential interactions with prescription medications. Curcumin has been shown to block the effects of chemotherapy. Many herbal anti-inflammatories have the effect of inhibiting clotting, so people taking warfarin or even aspirin therapy would be advised to discuss the matter with their doctor. Maritime pine bark extract should not be taken to excess; as best I can tell, it can provoke certain autoimmune problems due to revving things up too much. A little goes a long way. This issue is not present with less potent forms of resveratrol.

We could stop every illegal from coming across the border and this virus could still easily come into the states through legal immigration and commerce. Take a look at a map of El Paso and Juarez. Try and stop a virus from jumping the border in an area like that.

Hard to say. But with the flu the idea is to vaccinate before there is a breakout. The flu may never spread as far as Ohio, or it could be there already and we just don’t know it yet. But it is a moot point, it doesn’t sound like the CDC is planning on making a vaccine against this stuff.
Add the time it would take to manufacture a vaccine in large quantities to the three weeks it takes to get immunity from the flu vaccine, and the horse is way out of the barn. The possible epidemic will just have to run its course. The good news is the fatality rate in this country with appropriate medical care is quite low. The other good news I read upstream is that this particular strain appears to be sensitive to Tamiflu.
However, having said that, we are way overdue for a flu pandemic. Even with good medical care here, a large flu outbreak would overtax our medical system. During flu season we are often at the point where there are no free hospital beds in the city, let alone ICU beds. If tens of thousands of people were to come down with flu badly enough to need hospitalization, the system would break.

I had no reason to look into that. All I know is it’s gotten a sort of tinfoil reputation, rightfully or not, and it’ll turn you blue if you take too much, or for too long. What are the supposed benefits?
