Be cautioned that flu works in waves. After an outbreak, there will be a lull during which the flu is expanding its territory and number of infections. New cases will not emerge until after the incubation period.

For the next several days it is likely that we will see only a few, outlying cases, and most people will assume it is over. Then a few multi-person outbreaks. And finally, there will be a major citywide attack, with many, many people ill.

(From Wikipedia)Effectiveness
Alcohol rubs kill many different kinds of bacteria, including antibiotic resistant bacteria and TB bacteria. Alcohol rubs inactivate many different kinds of viruses, including the flu virus and the common cold virus. Alcohol rubs also kill fungus.

Not all pathogens are equally susceptible. Certain bacteria, especially the spore-forming gram positives (e.g. Clostridium difficile) are relatively resistant and remain biologically viable. During the Anthrax attacks on the United States Postal Service, authorities warned that alcohol hand rubs would not kill anthrax spores. In environments with high lipids or protein waste (such as food processing), the use of alcohol hand rubs alone may not be sufficient to ensure proper hand hygiene.

But it looks as if Purell® VF447 hand sanitizer is fairly effective. I need to look for some.

I don’t think this will be a end of the world bug or even a 1914 Spanish Flu, but when you combine it with all the other things happening, well how much more until people panic, many are skittish now a hot summer localized shortages of goods and services and flu outbreak how much kinling do you have to add before you get a big fire?

I am adding more water and a couple extra bottles of beach to my preps and then praying.

Jack

Incubation period unknown but probably 1-7 days, most likely 2-5 day

per New York press conf that ended a few minutes ago- incubation for this one is 2-3 days so it’s unlikely the president was exposed..

Thanks to you both for the info. My physical therapist just got back from vacation in Mexico. Think I’ll cancel my appointment for Tuesday.

Byron T. Steele HS in Cibilo [near San Antonio] shut down because of swine flu.

Swine Flu Closes Byron Steele High School
2 Students Confirmed Ill With Virus

POSTED: Saturday, April 25, 2009
UPDATED: 3:23 pm CDT April 25, 2009
SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Department of State Health Services announced Saturday that Byron Steele High School in Cibolo will temporarily close as public health and school officials work to keep swine influenza from spreading.

The school closing is effective immediately. The school’s extracurricular activities also will be cancelled.

Swine flu was confirmed earlier this month in two students from the school, and a third student is listed as a probable case with lab test results pending. The original two have recovered, and the third is recovering.

The school is part of the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District in Guadalupe County near San Antonio.

I heard a lecture from an expert on winter respiratory viruses from UVA who claimed that were able to recover live flu virus from hands after Purell. They weren't able to after soap and water. Be careful out there.
