Fear, anger and fatalism over swine flu in Mexico

By ALEXANDRA OLSON, Associated Press Writer 7 mins ago

MEXICO CITY – The schools and museums are closed. Sold-out games between Mexico's most popular soccer teams are being played in empty stadiums. Health workers are ordering sickly passengers off subways and buses. And while bars and nightclubs filled up as usual, even some teenagers were dancing with surgical masks on.

In New York City, health officials say about 75 students at a Queens high school have fallen ill with flu-like symptoms and testing is under way to rule out that is the same strain of swine flu found in Mexico. Results could take several days.

How did that happen? Illegals? Trip to messyco? I wish they would say.

If this is the real deal, it will go exponential. We’ll know in a couple of days.

Flu is very difficult to contain.

What you need to worry about are the special statistics.

If you look at Drudgereport.com today you will notice the headline "1000 cases" and another headline "60 dead".

That's 6 out of 100, or 6%.

Although this is just preliminary, that makes this particular flu more deadly than the Spanish Flu in WWI.

Might as well stop the wind from blowing.
Gonna stop all trucks? Cars? Planes? etc etc.

This is unavoidable in the Jet Age.

The 1918-1920 Spanish Flu moved around the world unstoppably even at ship speed.

Today, it’s hours instead of weeks.

Best method is quarantine.

Yep, this could get ugly. Hopefully it arrives as the school year is ending, making quarantine a bit easier. It would have been worse if it hit in the Fall.

Sounds like a darned good way to give Mexican flu to the National Guard.

The way you do a quarantine is you tell them to not cross a line ~ then you get back a ways and if anybody crosses the line you holler at them. If they keep coming toward you they become part of the statistical base. But, this is not black death or cholera so you have to be more restrictive.

Define quarantine. Nobody goes to work? All borders are closed? Trade stops? Police and nurses stay home?

That's a mighty broad word with incalculable implications.

All this time I was looking out for this kind of development in China, but it popped up across the Pacific first.

Now contagion would be of paramount concern.

The committee “will be asked, ‘should we raise the alert level to phase four or phase five,’ depending on their appreciation of how far the virus has spread,” Hartl said.

I think we can expect to be moving through those levels fairly soon based on 1000 effected, deaths, spreading outside of countries etc.

How do you stop the 100s of thousands of people from all over the globe who legally fly into the USA every single day?

We’ll be able to fly...don’t fear the reaper
Baby I’m your man”

Department of Transporation can simply ground all flights.

Should this be a bigger story than it already is? Mortalities are in the range of 10%, and it appears quite quickly, spreading before it is suspected. The rapid travel from vacation spots in Mexico to other foreign destinations, as well as being carried by illegal transients crossing the US-Mexico border, have all the earmarx of coming from some entity engaged in bioterrorism, taking advantage of some unusual circumstances.
