Democrat Michael Bennet, appointed to fill the seat of Ken Salazar when he was tapped as Secretary of the Interior, has his work cut out for him if he is to put himself in a strong position for re-election in 2010, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted April 17-19.
Forty-one percent of voters disapprove of his job performance compared to 34 percent who give him positive marks, with 25 percent undecided. One of his weaknesses is with the 14 percent of the sample who are Hispanic and may still be unhappy that a Hispanic was not named to succeed Salazar. They disapprove of him by a 45 percent to 36 percent with 18 percent expressing no opinion. That compares to the 58 percent to 36 percent approval ratio that President Obama enjoys. Independents also disapprove of Bennet, by 43 percent to 32 percent with 25 percent undecided.
Fortunately for Bennet, the most mentioned Republican opponents arent racking up any great numbers either.
Aurora City Councilman and businessman Ryan Frazier, who has set up an exploratory committee, is so little known that 66 percent of voters dont have an opinion about him. Former Rep. Bob Beauprez, who lost the 2006 governors race to Democrat Bill Ritter, is seen unfavorably by 43 percent of voters and positively by 33 percent with 25 percent undecided. Fifty-five percent of voters dont know enough about Republican up-and-comer Josh Penry, the state Senate minority leader, to have an opinion of him. Sixty-one percent dont know Ken Buck, district attorney of Weld County in the north central part of the state.
Bennet doesnt shine in match-ups with any of them, given the polls 3 point margin of error.

I’m still at a loss as to why Bennet was appointed in the first place? Maybe Bill Ritter wanted to look non-political. Perhaps it’s because Bennet is so wealthy. In any event, this is an opportunity.
I hope Beauprez isn’t the nominee.
Well, they’d be evenly matched. But a “known” Republican almost always has a 40% bloc against him in a state with voting demographics like this at the present time (ditto with a “known” Democrat).
He was thrashed in 2006 against Ritter for Governor but it wasn’t entirely his fault.
The CO GOP needs to find somebody.
