A quick tour through the week’s headlines suggests the Republican Party is beginning to come to terms with the last election and that consensus is emerging among GOP elites that the party needs to move away from discordant social issues.
There was Sen. John McCain's daughter and his campaign manager who last week demanded that their fellow Republicans embrace same-sex marriage. Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman – the most devoted modernizer among the party's 2012 hopefuls – won approving words from New York Times columnist Frank Rich for his call to downplay divisive values issues. The party’s top elected leaders in Congress, meanwhile, spooked by being attacked as the “party of no,” were recasting themselves as a constructive, respectful opposition to a popular president.
But outside Washington, the reality is very different. Rank-and-file Republicans remain, by all indications, staunchly conservative, and they appear to have no desire to moderate their views. GOP activists and operatives say they hear intense anger at the White House and at the party’s own leaders on familiar issues – taxes, homosexuality, and immigration. Within the party, conservative groups have grown stronger absent the emergence of any organized moderate faction.

How did a lame-brain twit being a daughter of a very unpopular RINO and loser mclame get any traction from Conservatives? I think not, only within the circle of RINOs, libdems and MSM trying to rescue their RINO friends.
So, Pilate like, it seems like it boils down to choosing social gay and abortion advocates or selecting conservatives who are Democrat families with union members [also known as Reagan Democrats].
Obviously the good GOP supporter will choose the one most likely to export jobs.

Social issues are not my #1 issues. I am first and foremost fiscal conservatism. That said, the idea that the GOP is wrong by having the same position as the majority of Americans on same sex marriage is crazy. California is off the cliff politically...the GOP is dead out there. That said, the majority of CA residents voted against same sex marriage. Anyone who debates that is is social issues as the central problem in the GOP is dishonest. The problem lies in the GOP spending foolishly and growing government when they had power, and ceding the advantage on a number of fiscal issues to the Democrats. They let a central planner get elected as a tax cutter.
You mean , GOP leaders--- and not all of them, just the ones the MSM touts.
Don't worry, somebody will emerge who will Folllow the base.
I remember 1980 when the media tried to play up Reagan's "senility" (he was 69) and try to push that weenie Bush on us, but then Reagan had that famous moment at one of those debates and sealed the deal, despite the workings of the miserable MSM. I doubt conservatives will be denied this time around, despite their best efforts
Barry Goldwater warned that if the Republican party ever turns into a Religous organzation(which it has) then you can kiss the party good bye.
We need to have one issue and one only and that is fixing the budget and the excesses in government.
We need to get rid of as much of government as possible and reverse the Socialism that has crept into the system.

I'm sorry but Megan McCain doesn't speak for anyone in the party and she is little more than a useful idiot for the left. John McCain's campaign manger has little reason to be consulted on anything political after his debacle in the last election. Why would anyone assume that these idiots ought to be party leaders?
It hardly matters how Conservative the country is or isn’t. America is being redefined by the courts. Gay marriage will soon be the norm, thanks to the courts. Liberalism is spread this way as we all know. But, we Conservatives must no longer for any reason, throw our votes and our principles out the window on election day. The Republican Party is where it is because of us doing just that. The Party and the Politicians in it HAVE to be held accountable. Voting for a RINO is no longer an option(think John McCain). We have to elect those that have the same principles as those that send them to Washington.
GOP...is that some kind of organization or something? Sounds useless whatever it is.
The problem with the GOP is the elites and people like McCain. There is no leadership and no standing up for what is right. If the GOP wants back in power, which I doubt, they need to look back to Reagan.

The Hill reports on the embrace. Hatch explains GOP leadership at work: “I like Barack Obama and I want to help him if I can.”
It wasn’t Republicans opposition to illegal immigration, or sexual activism (homosexuality, abortion, etc) that loses elections. These issues if anything have kept people in the party that would otherwise have left it do to the abandonment of fiscal conservatism. The GOP has lost because of a discordant message, the lifting up of marginally conservative candidates simply because they have money to run, the lack of a clear message that speaks to the people and speaks to the heart of problems not just on wallstreet but the ones in D.C. which people are extremely frustrated with. Conservatism should be a message of hope, strength, and courage. Messages that believe that the role of the government should be small so the role of the citizen can be great. That the individual sovereignity a citizen and their exercising of their consent without intimidation or manipulation by a government grown too big should be the goal. That every child should have the hope of having a Mom and Dad and that parents should put the interests of the children before their selfish ones not for religious purposes but because it is the best option for raising stable children.
That doesn’t mean that we have to tear down the imperfect realities of others but we should dare not lift them up as an example which is more and more the case and it has had dangerous consequences for our nation with greater rates of single motherhood, men taking less responsibility or desiring no responsibility for their children and individuals from these broken families have a direct line not to a future but instead a prison cell. It is not just a religious issue that the unborn and the infirm should be protected it is a human issue and when we don’t we set a tone of responsibility for those who are least capable of protecting themselves we set a tone that feeds an ugliness in society that leads to modes of thinking that say “people are disposable” and “responsibility is optional”. It sets us on the road to not the eugenic indifference of the past but one that is based on personal selfishness where at least those in the past had a misguide goal for the betterment of humanity today we offer millions of babies to be burned with the trash not so unlike the sacrifices at Carthage. We dig up those small bones in horror while today we accept as normal the on going horror of today.
As for illegal immigration it is an issue that immigrants and natives should be able to understand. It has been the insistence of casting the argument as an either or proposition that either you are pro immigrant or you are a bigot. What this accomplished for the GOP in trying to steam roll the perfectly reasonable idea that the law of the land should be enforced is that it cost it votes from conservatives and drove away some legal immigrant votes. The GOP should be the party of the rule of law and not just for the sake of the law but because it is good for this country and any country that wants to maintain its internal integrity. You can not have an endless flow of individuals that do not assimilate, tax existing social resources, and take jobs that should be reserved for legal residents. It was the moderates not the conservatives that started the stupid fight over immigration.
It is they as they always do who gladly take up the banner of the left when convenient and it is their lack of unity that continues to cause us to lose because we conservatives who make up the vast core of the party are not just religious we are principled which is why we often find ourselves at odds with individuals in our own party and we believe in the founding principles of this nation. The irony is that if the founding principles had been adhered to and if we didn’t have the monster government feeding our social ills by being the premier enabling parent and substitute father for millions we could open our borders more freely without worry but in United states of today we can’t because it grows a political underclass that votes not for knowledge of freedom and dignity but out of poverty and submission and allegiance to thieves in Washington D.C.
That said I believe that most self styled moderates are not moderate in politics at all they are simply moderately immature, stupid, and or unprincipled. If they don’t hold the constitution sacrosanct, they don’t believe in a smaller more citizen driven government, and they don’t respect the natural traditional values and responsibilities of the family, and they don’t respect the laws of the land concerning immigration then I ask how are they conservative or Republican at all?
