Walt Disney's first black princess causes controversy

WALT Disney's first black princess is steeped in controversy, with the studio changing her name and job, but still facing claims of racial insensitivity.

Following claims of racial insensitivity, the studio -- known for its wholesome and predominantly white family values -- has made several changes to its first African-American princess, Tiana.

Voiced by Anika Noni Rose, Tiana is the star of a new animated film to be released this Christmas, titled The Princess and the Frog. Tiana's mother will be played by talk-show host Oprah Winfrey.

Disney has changed the profession of the princess to an aspiring restaurant entrepreneur, instead of being a chambermaid.

It has also changed her name -- Tiana, instead of Maddy. Critics thought Maddy was too similar to Mammy -- a once-common term for black female slaves in white households.

The controversy has intensified after it was revealed the film would be set in New Orleans and Tiana would find love with an almost-white prince.

His skin has been described as olive-toned and he will be voiced by Brazilian actor Bruno Campos.

"What? No black prince? What's up with this?" blogged James Collier on Acting White, an anti-racism website.

"Perhaps Disney doesn't want the future mothers of dwindling white America being imprinted so early in their lives with the notion of a black suitor."

Another blogger, Angela Helm, complained to the Black Voices website that even though there was a real-life black man in the highest office in the land, Disney seemed to think a black man was not "worthy of the title of prince".

I have to disagree with you there. It’s not only liberals concerned with skin color or ethnicity or gender. This is common across the board. I mean board as in spectrum. Not this board in particular.

Does your cowboy represent rednecks? Cos it’s ok now to slam rednecks. Rednecks, white trailer trash, Christians, etc. They’re fine to trash, joke about. But don’t dare joke about blacks or homos, or illegals or hispanics.

You lost me on the signs/churches thing. Not sure what you’re saying here. NCC coalition of liberal churches?

"No, give her an Asian non-white prince and I'll reconsider. *\;-) "

That's exactly what happened when Brandy did Cinderella on TV a few years back.

what would predominantly black family values be?
Why are they not the same?
****************************

This is the part that caught my eye too, as well as others apparently, from reading through the thread.

Any effort made to explain why and how black family values are different will most cetainly be viewed as RACIST.

And we all know how THEY love to play the RACE card.

Screw ‘em, they need to grow up and start acting mature- as an entire race.

And btw, the half black man in the “highest office” is NOT worthy of it, being a usurper and an empty suit.

He should stick to playing basketball, where he can cheat with the rest of the street thug, community organizer, basketball Jones wannabees.

The setting of course is New Orleans. I see that they couldn’t resist a Jazz singing alligator named Louis. What really makes me smile is the lovesick Cajun firefly character named.....Ray.

>Was that an attempt at humor or sarcasm or something?

Nope. It happenned in January of 09 and the whole family was there to see it.

>Never happened in any of the times that I was there.

Or, you never noticed it.

>Not true at all.

You know, I find that comment insulting.

I WAS there and it WAS so. Exactly as I wrote and witnessed by my entire family in January of this year.

>At least not any of the times that I have been there.

That you noticed.

>You really should not post false information.

We were there.
In fact, I live near there and visit regularly.
You should stop assuming that YOU are the source here of what is true or false.
The fact is, we were there in January of 09 and it was so.

You need to stop drinking the kool aid and open your eyes.

I’ve worked there for six years and there are not men playing female face characters. Maybe its time you go see a eye doctor because you appear to be going blind.

Exactly. An oxymoron.

No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.

I remember all the hoo-ha about the Lion King. Since Whoopi Goldberg and Cheech Marin did the voices of the dumb, evil hyenas, that meant that the hyenas were supposed to be minorities, and that was “racist,” you see. And Scar had darker fur than the “good guy” lions, which was supposed to be more evidence of racism. It went on and on. Never mind that a white Englishman did the voice of the villain, while several nonwhite actors did the voices of good characters, and gay Elton John wrote the songs. The movie was evil and racist and sexist and homophobic!

I think all the whining about that movie is one of the things that made me a conservative.

We're pretty Disney'ed out for a while.
My daughter went when she was 2 so she had no memories and she begged up to go again. So we went when was about 10 and my son 7. And then we did it a couple more times. We used to go the last week in August when a lot of schools were already back in session. It was reasonably priced, too. But I can't get the days off anymore anyway.

I managed to get a mini-essay published in the New York Daily News based on all that criticism and how ridiculous it was. I love the illustration that someone drew to accompany it.

That wasn’t Disney. That was the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Houston wanted to be Cinderella, but it took so long to get the project green-lighted that she opted for the Fairy Godmother role and gave the lead to Brandy. (the girl from “Moesha”)

the studio -- known for its wholesome and predominantly white family values Barf. Curious, wonder which values the writer believes only apply to white people?

I wondered this, too. Are family values specific to race or simply family values? And which values apply to each race? Sheesh, barf is right.

WDW...All of the female characters were men drag queens.

Umm... I think that's a load of BS.

I just returned from a week at WDW, and the princesses were all beautiful young ladies. I have the photos to prove it. (Got pics of my 6yo daughter with each one...)

The crowds sucked, but I didn't see ANY of what you describe.

If you are so sure sure of yourself why don't you post pictures proving it. Because it appears no one else is believing you.
