The Fabius-Pompey Central School District is closing Thursday and Friday as a precaution after a female high school student who recently traveled to Mexico tested positive for swine flu.
The student lives in Cortland County and is one of three possible human swine flu cases reported earlier this week by the Cortland Health Department.
The state Health Department announced Wednesday preliminary tests showed the high school student has the illness. Final confirmation is expected from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today .

You know, if nothing else, why on EARTH hasn’t the government, or failingng that, the schools, suggested that any students who traveled to Mexico on spring break should stay home for a few days, until they are certain they don’t have the flu.
It seems like a pretty elementary thing to do. In fact, if one of my kids had just come bakc from Mexico, I think I’d keep him home from school for a few days, as common courtesy in protecting my neighbors’ kids from possible contagion.
100,000 went to Mexico for Spring Break and unintentionally brought Swine Flu back with them.
That would make too much sense.
I’ll bet that’s not the kind of souvenir the kid wanted to bring back.
That’s a lot of carriers. Time will tell what the outcome will be.
Some of my inlaws and possibly some of my grandchildren might have gone down to Mexico for spring break, but my son-in-law’s brother-in-law’s father is very ill with cancer, so they cancelled the trip. My grandchildren went down to the Carolina shore instead with their parents and some friends.
There was no word of this epidemic until spring break was already unleashed, unfortunately. Unlucky timing.
I never thought I’d see the day that the place I live in makes it to Free Republic.
This school district is about seven miles south of my location.

It’s getting closer and closer to me every day, metmom. Not freaking out, but will curtail handshaking with people I don’t know.
High schools have later spring breaks than colleges, so IMO, we’re actually really fortunate this didn’t happen much earlier. College kids are way more likely to travel to Mexico for spring break, more likely to come into contact with people all over the world, and more likely to live in somewhat crowded conditions that make disease transmission easier. I could easily see an entire dorm floor full of kids from probably a dozen or so states and a couple countries infected by the time the one person who went to Cancun for break begins to show symptoms... unlucky timing, yes, but it could have been far worse.
I thought I heard it was a teacher and not a student, but whatever. And the guy in Cortland I heard was not positive.
The article says that there were 3 suspect cases in Cortland County and one of them was determined to not be swine flu. There was one confirmed case and one unsure.
