Good riddance to Arlen Specter [the RINOs have destroyed the GOP]
The Daily News, Dayton, Oh. ^ | 2009-04-29 | Cal Thomas

Posted on 04/29/2009 10:48:58 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

The return of Sen. Arlen Specter to the Democratic Party (he flipped in 1965 from “Kennedy Democrat” to Republican) is something that should be celebrated by Republicans, at least those who are proud to call themselves conservatives. Specter is a career politician whose first priority is himself.

Specter, whose predictable lament that the GOP is not the “big tent” he had been led to believe it was, now embraces a Democratic Party that is an even smaller tent. How many pro-life Democrats exercise any influence in that party? How many opponents to same-sex marriage are in the Democratic leadership? Smaller government? Lower taxes? No leading Democrat, inside or outside Congress, subscribes to such things. And yet the big media and many pundits continue the fiction that Republicans are in electoral trouble because they do not tolerate liberal ideas.

The day Democrats embrace those holding conservative ideas and implement at least some of them will be the day Republicans can be told to water down their principles. In fact, Republicans in recent years have behaved more like Democrats than Republicans and have paid the electoral price for doing so. Republicans under George W. Bush added to the size and cost of government. Republicans created new spending programs and increased the reach of the federal government in education and other areas. The major difference between Republicans and Democrats these days is this: Democrats know how to use power when they get it; Republicans, when they gain power, spend most of their political capital trying to prove they are not mean, uncaring, racist, sexist and homophobic. Republicans masquerade as Democrats and want to be liked. Democrats live to rule.

I couldn't stand old "scottish law" Arlen.....but I have to say that "Republican" in not necessarily mean "conservative".

we have a lot of conservatives in the Republican party.....there also are a few in the Rat party, and there used to be a lot more.....

I want a vigorous party of fiscal conservatives and social moderates, strong defense, strong nationality issues.....

I don't expect all Republicans to be Sarah Palin's ....and we have to remember that what Reagan the Great brought to our party was independent thinking and a positive can-do attitude...

Then you will get *nothing*. Conservatism comes as a lump, and really cannot be dissected. Without the Christian Right, and the libertarians, you will get no fiscal conservatism, nor strong defense, nor strong nationality.

.and we have to remember that what Reagan the Great brought to our party was independent thinking and a positive can-do attitude...

What Reagan brought was an united Conservatism. The rest follows.

In the end a social moderate gets you a fiscal moderate.

The vast amount of the budget is spend on social programs and destroys any attempt at being fiscally conservative.

Or in other words - it is an oxymoron to be a “social moderate” and a fiscal conservative.

This is either about the party (Repuplican) or about policy (Conservatism). I could care less about the party - Republican as they seem to be more or less Democratic Lite. I do care about the policies and that seems to be forsaken by both parties (and I don’t count the Democratic party). If the Republicans do care about getting back into power (geez, I would actually hope that no politician had any power), then they have to change there policies... Hello ... limited government, limited spending, hell, the rest will take care of itself...

If the next “Republican” does not reduce federal spending (by 50% - at least) or more, I’m giving up and going Libertarian (or something else). I have been a Republican all of my life but when Republicans begin to act like Democrats, I will find another party.

Yes, you stupid media hacks, we Republicans actually do care about policy rather than party...strange concept I know...

Who ever destroyed the republican party did good thing...
It was a brilliant tactic except for one thing..

It gave conservative democrats and conservative republicans UNITY..
Because it happened a new voting block is being developed..
A new caucus.. all it takes is for "some one" to UNITE the factions..

A new very powerful caucus.. more powerful than any mere PARTY..
"Party" could be a dying concept.. all thats waiting is a cadre of leaders..
With spies in BOTH parties..

Buh-bye RINO- Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ as you leave.
..And while you're at it, take all the other democrats posing as republicans, with you.

Here's hoping the republicans "get it" now.( I'm not holding my breath waiting for them to wake up, though )

I'm not angry at the democrats for winning the election. They played a better game. I'm furious at the republicans for losing. Can't blame it all on McCain either. It's everyone who has been making 1/2 a$$ed, timid, efforts at dealing with democrats.

As much as we know, here on FR, about dems, and what they're capable of- how much more did the repub politicians in D.C. know about them?( I hope they (pubs) aren't surprised, or shocked, at the amount of damage that's been done to our nation in only 100 days.)

Republicans didn't do anything to win the election, (with the exception of Sarah Palin)

Just one example: We've known for years that there isn't a press in this country. Have they (pubs) found a way to get their message to the people? And what exactly is their message?

What does it mean to be Republican? What does it stand for? It's like the brand name has been damaged.

IMO-making a fresh start with a third party, and running candidates who understand and respect what the Constitution is- who will make every effort to win elections, and who will go to Washington to serve the American people- (rather than the other way around)- this seems like a good idea to me.

Our nation is in terrible shape. We are on the verge of losing everything. We are in danger of being attacked again.

We don't need anymore weak willed self serving politicians, going to Washington, and worrying about being invited to cocktail parties. We need people who are focused, and serious about what their job is.

Rant-OFF/

Actually Bush set up the party for the loss. He even put Arlen Spector over the top in his last primary election. There goes the Republican no matter how liberal argument.

Do you think GWB set all this up by his refusal to espouse conservatism starting in 2005?
