Waiting for Netanyahu

President Barack Obama held a prime-time news conference Wednesday to mark his first 100 days in office. The potential flu pandemic was topic number one. Next came the economic crisis, with worries about the security of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal a close third.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict went unmentioned.

Next week, however, expect Israel to be in the Washington limelight. The 2009 AIPAC Policy Conference kicks off on Sunday with speeches by leading US politicians and Christian religious leaders. President Shimon Peres is scheduled to talk on Monday morning, and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will deliver his banquet address Monday evening, via satellite.

Following his AIPAC speech, Peres will head to the White House for a meeting with Obama. Their conversation will focus on Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons - another topic which got nary a mention during the news conference.

This is an international problem, not Israel's alone, Peres will say. In an Independence Day interview with Channel 10, our president mused about a coalition nuclear umbrella which signals the mullahs: "If you use a nuclear weapon - no matter against whom - you'll get a nuclear response."

A better plan is to give them every reason not to build a bomb in the first place, and if necessary to ensure that they do not.

Maybe he’ll channel Reagan..remember the WH address, when the mike was left open, and when asked to give a voice test, the Gipper said ( I can’t remember the exact line ) “my fellow Americans, the bombing of Russia begins in 3 seconds..

President Shimon Peres is scheduled to talk on Monday morning, and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will deliver his banquet address Monday evening, via satellite.

According to earlier news stories, Netanyahu will not be there at the AIPAC meeting because Holy Hussein refused to meet with him. He sent Peres to take his place.

I notice that this news story does not mention that background, possibly because they would rather bury it than make matters worse.

It’s on video tape at the Reagan library in one of those rooms up there. He sure got his basic message out.

FYI..file this under “here’s something to look forward to.” I believe we have one more as yet unseen/unheard message from Pres. Reagan. Remember the moving and eloquent ( pre-recorded) obituary that Lady Thatcher delivered at Reagan’s funeral. The background is that in the early 90’s, at the first onset of his Alzenheimer’s, he called her and asked her to record it. Of course, that also means that he reciprocated, and somewhere in a vault in London is a DVD of the Gipper’s eulogy for the Iron Lady, and there’s probably a valuable message for Americans today within those words.

I found the story about Obama’s refusal to meet with Netanyahu. It was in the Jerusalem Post on April 19.

One of the best reasons I can think of is, they get bombed off the freakin' map.
