Brent Bozell: Opie Gets Ugly ( Another Ron Howard anti-Catholic smear film )
cnsnews.com | April 30, 2009 | L. Brent Bozell III

Posted on 05/02/2009 6:11:35 AM PDT by kellynla

When the conglomerates behind the viciously anti-Catholic book "The DaVinci Code" were looking for a director, Newsweek reported Ron Howard had a secret weapon: his aw-shucks child-star Opie Taylor likeability. "Ron is not a polarizer," said one. "We all knew the book was quite controversial, and we were ready for that. But we didn’t want to add to it."

In that same article in 2006, it became clear that Howard wasn’t going to make the film less vicious (or less filled with historical lies and distortions) than the book. There would be "no placating. It would be ludicrous to take on this subject and try to take the edges off. We’re doing this movie because we like the book." (Emphasis his.)

This is where the aw-shucks routine goes out the window. It’s one thing to say you like a good mystery with historical overtones. It’s another thing to say you like a fiction book that paints the Catholic Church as an evil nest of lying murderers conspiring to protect the lie that Jesus Christ is God.

Then consider that "DaVinci Code" author Dan Brown repeatedly has claimed that his wild-eyed conspiracy theories are true. The book even carried the statement that "All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate."

Now “no-placating” Howard is back, pushing a new movie version of a Brown book called "Angels & Demons."

In a nasty article on the Huffington Post website, Howard spat at William Donohue of the Catholic League: "I guess Mr. Donohue and I do have one thing in common: we both like to create fictional tales, as he has done with his silly and mean-spirited work of propaganda."

"The Catholic Church never murdered a single member of the Illuminati.

A Catholic blogger who calls himself the Curt Jester ably underlined how audacious and ridiculous Howard sounds.

He satirically proclaimed his own film project: “I am producing a movie on Ron Howard’s family. In the movie based on my research I say his father was a drug pusher, and his mother is a prostitute, and that Ron Howard engages in S&M....I will present the Howard family as something totally based on lies, and question whether his parents really were his parents in the first place.” And “of course this is just a movie, so people should not be upset about my portrayal of the Howard family at all.”

He then predicted the Howard family would enjoy it as an exciting mystery. Ron Howard should read this and understand exactly what his cinematic versions of Dan Brown hate-speeches feel like to Catholics."

For those who missed it, Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League, appeared on EWTN last night. He spoke about the level of anti-Catholicism of Ron Howard. Two days ago, Donohue wrote this piece:

HYPOCRISY MARKS “ANGELS & DEMONS”

April 30, 2009

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on a revealing news story about the upcoming movie, “Angels & Demons”:

“There will be no Muslim assassin in the film version of Dan Brown’s book, Angels & Demons; director Ron Howard has seen to that. But, of course, he has no problem culturally assassinating Catholicism. And it’s not just Howard who is the hypocrite: co-producer Brian Grazer, and the production studio, Sony, are guilty of giving Muslims a pass while sticking it to Catholics.

“After 9/11, NBC toyed with the idea of doing a mini-series on the events of that tragic day. Grazer was to produce the film, but it never materialized due to its controversial nature. More important, Grazer said it was his goal to ‘humanize’ Muslims, specifically denouncing any attempt to ‘demonize’ them. Evidently, it’s just Catholics who are worthy of being demonized: Grazer co-produced ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and now he is co-producing ‘Angels & Demons.’

“Last year, with less than four days to go before Sony released a video game, LittleBigPlanet, it recalled every copy before it hit the stores. Why? One of the background songs contained two Arabic expressions found in the Koran, and that was considered a no-no. ‘We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologize for any offense this may have caused.’ But there will be no action—immediate or delayed—to rectify the propaganda against Catholicism in ‘Angels & Demons,’ and there most certainly will be no apology.

“It’s all so sick. Radical Muslims fly our planes into our buildings, killing thousands, and Muslims across the board are afforded more respect than the rescue workers—most of whom were Catholic—who lost their lives on 9/11. The cultural inversions continue to multiply, and the level of hypocrisy is at a record high. If only Hollywood thought of Catholics as if they were Muslims! If it did, the Catholic League would fold in a New York minute.”

It is a MOVIE!

Rambo isn’t real. The Wookie never existed. The 300 were 300 shy.

Competitive offendedness. What a concept.

Yet another attack on traditional values by Hollywood liberals, this time by Dopey Opie.

The crypto-socialist, promiscous, multiple-divorced, multiple-abortion, foul-mouthed airheads are trying to make religious conservatives look bad once again.

Catholics should boycott Sony products - if they feel it is Ok to tell lies about the Catholic Church why then should we help them along by buying their products.

Dan Brown, while being historically retarded, at least does not refute that he is trying to have a go at the Church. On the other hand Opie’s ‘It’s just a movie I’m making’ type speech is enough to make one sick.

Hopefully the end result will be that more Catholics have a good look at the Church and reject Dan Brown’s little stories.

Actually it’s the manifestation of the efforts of a cabal of cowardly con men and the millions of ignorant, gullible suckers who eagerly give them their money.

I enjoyed "The DaVinci Code" book and movie, found the fictional storyline intriguing, and it didn't leave me with a diminished view of the Catholic Church or that Jesus is not the son of God.

Instead of griping, Catholics should band together and look for producers/directors in Hollywood to put out more pro-family/faith films. Aside from Passion of the Christ, where are the new classics for all the numerous epic Biblical stories that could be put to film?

You're time would have probably been better spent if you had spent as much time reading a Bible.

The problem is, for most of todays folks, the movie is not just a form of entertainment anymore. They get their views from Hollywood, Jon Stewart, Steven Colbair, Bill Mahr, Michael Moore, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Sean Penn, Madonna, et al.

These are the people who are shaping America’s view. They take a movie like Sicko, or Bowling for Colombine or W or Frost Nixon, and think of them as based on a true story or truth in a documentary. Just look at how many accolades were afforded to Algore for an inconvenient truth. He got a nobel peace prize for goodness sake, and that was pretty much ALL fiction portrayed as truth.

No, gone are the days where its only a movie will hold water.

Another idiot who doesn’t know who at least half of his audience is. And they don’t care. When you have the kind of money Howard has there’s only one reason to do stuff like this. And that reason is he’s working for the “anti” Christian.
