And all the assumes would have to be true. And of course, our "representatives" in Congress would have to find new ways to tax us to make up for the lost revenue from gas taxes.
I saw some guy on CNBC the other day and he had invented an engine that got 100 mpg and could be put into a SUV (he had installed one in a hummer.)
The point they made in the segment was, many Americans need a large car, want a large car. They don’t want a Prius or a Fiat, they need to haul sheets of plywood from Home Depot, transport kids or pets to and from places, etc. So why push small cars when they aren’t practical for many Americans, instead find a way to make larger cars more efficient.
You forgot the part about how Big Oil is suppressing his invention.
Or if gas is $2 a gal. it would be $23,000 to save $1400 a year. If buying one Prius doesn’t make economic sense why would buying a million or two?

Firstly engines don’t get XXX MPG ,, they burn fuel and make power ,, vehicles that move get MPG; an engine by itself is nothing. Secondly a Hummer H2 (along with every other car in the US) could be retuned for at least 20% more MPG if we disregarded emission standards , cars run richer than necessary to keep emissions happy (and our cars would still be plenty clean with modern direct injection and advanced ignition systems)... I don’t care if you have the most fuel efficient engine imaginable when you put it in a 3 ton Hummer H2 you won’t get anywhere near 100 mpg ,, best possible would be doubling the mileage to 20 or so with a small turbodiesel.
People aren't buying Prii for economic reasons, it's an ego trip, a self image massage.
There’s a severe disease or delusion with the Globull Warming mind, only a functually economic moron could espouse this Priazz Plan and not be declared insane. As if the total cost of changing to electric cars doesn’t involve massive other costs, electric generation & infrastructure, new manufacturers, mines as well as using more coal & oil & much more. I think the real economic analysis has been done already and the Prius is only the great step forward in the Land of the Unicorns.
I think a fairer comparison is the difference in the cost of Prius vs. whatever else you would have purchased. And the cost difference has to amortized over the economic life of the vehicle using a reasonable “cost of money”, with future gasoline purchases discounted. If the alternate doesn’t provide the same performance, e.g., take six kids to soccer practice and carry sheetrock home, then it’s not a fair comparison.
This guy is an economic illiterate. The article is so bad it’s not even possible to know where to begin. He is in fantasy land.
I found the article about it. It was an H3, not an H2, and the engine is a hybrid.

His plan isn’t to save money, it’s to cut down purchases from OPEC.
Not only that, if you go to the company's website, you find that it's a plug-in hybrid. That means some of the gas savings are replaced by higher costs through your electric meter.

Blah, blah, blah! I love my ‘09 Prius. I commute 22 miles a day round trip to the office, 54 miles in the summer. Last week on an 80 mile round trip to court I got exactly 50 mpg average.
There’s a Buick SUV 4X4 (plenty of room for the dog, luggage, groceries, kids, kayaks on the roof and small appliances for the cottage) in the yard which my wife drives and an full size F150 4X4 for those sheets of plywood and sheet rock, dump runs and pellets for heat.

I forgot to add that I also feel exceedingly virtuous when I drive the Prius, but I am a shallow fellow. :)
I know, we did, the last US cars we purchased were is 1975 & 1977 cars, which were pure garbage! We never looked back and now prefer Japanese & German cars.
Ban electric Tonka Toys, take the excessive taxes off oil, drill California and all the oil problems are solved!
