The California Supreme Court is letting stand a lower court ruling that allowed a private religious school to expel two girls for an alleged lesbian relationship. The state's highest court this week declined a request from the girls' attorney to review the case. The 4th District Court of Appeal in Riverside in January had upheld California Lutheran High School's right as a private, religious organization to exclude students based on their sexual orientation.
The teens initially sued the Riverside County school in 2005 based on a state anti-discrimination law. Advocates for religious freedom called it the right decision but the girls' attorney, Mike Grace, said he fears the decision could open the door to more religious discrimination.
This decision is not opening any doors to discrimination. It’s setting the limits of what our existing gay friendly laws are.
I can’t believe how liberals take everything to an extreme. I remember after the Supreme Court upheld the ban on partial birth abortion, Rosie O’Donnell said it was as if the women’s movement and abortion rights movement never happened. Which of course is absurd.
Exactly. Private schools can make their choices as they wish. If they take state money, or fed money, then that’s different.
If California allows private schools to expel Lesbians for their gay acts, then I think by the same reasoning, they will allow private schools unfriendly to Christians to expel them when they are discovered to say, be reading the Bible or studying the Bible or praying together.
After all, they can say what’s good for the goose is good for the gander and they can site this case as a precedent.
No big deal, since it's a private school, nobody is forced to go there, if they can't get enough people to go because of their rules, they go out of business.
You can't expel someone who never enrolls or leaves when they see they aren't welcome. Can't imagine Christian parents sending their kide to a priovate school that is anti-Christian.

This is a problem how? Private school that takes no public funds can refuse anyone they want, pretty much. 'Private' usually means 'church-based' but not always.
You can't reserve the right for one private school to exclude without reserving the right for another private school to exclude .
Last line should read:
You can’t reserve the right for one private school to exclude X without reserving the right for another private school to exclude Y.
It’s the right decision for the wrong reasons. In the eyes of the Judges, their descendants attend schools such as these. The last thing they want their kids doing is mingling with those they view as lesser citizens. I don’t know what’s worse here. The fact that they made the right decision on a fascist notion or the fact that they avoided a socialist one.
It’s a good decision. The Lutherans get to define THEIR agenda at that school, and parents choose it for the same reason. The sodomites just cannot STAND to not get their noses into every pie and ruin it.
Yah for California. A small glimmer of light in the twilight.
it should be noted that this High School is not an ELCA school..they prolly wouldn’t care too much about that sort of thing...this is a WELS school...you know, the group of Lutherans who actually read and follow the Bible...

Then its a step in the right direction. Religious schools discriminating against what they see as sinful is a natural law.
It's the word alleged that gives me a problem. Certainly the private school has the right to expel students for violating their rules, but the word alleged implies that the lesbian relationship has not been proven.
Or is this the news source covering its butt for legal purposes?
From what I scanned the girls where suing for being expelled because of their certain sexual activities. They WERE NOT suing because the school called them lesbos. I would think that by taking the route they (the girls) did it would only affirm the school’s charges.
Actually, if we hadn’t been spending billions and billions of dollars on AIDS research I’m sure we probably would have found a cure for cancer by now.

Yes, you are right. A private school can exclude anyone for any reason. They are, after all, a PRIVATE school. That suits me fine.
I guarantee you I would not be welcomed into any number of clubs due to my conservative opinions. That’s ok.

what are you talking about? so what if a private school unfriendly to Christians expels them when they are discovered to be reading a Bible... which Christian parents would send their Christian to a school like that?
