The National Rifle Association Foundation will present Sen. John McCain's ill-fated running mate with a military-style assault weapon next week.
The all-white "Alaskan Hunter" - fashionable until Labor Day - is the civilian version of a modified M-4 rifle carried by U.S. troops overseas.
Alaska's feisty Republican governor, who is weighing a potential 2012 presidential bid, will receive the rifle made by Templar Consulting at a May 14 NRA banquet.
It's engraved with Palin's name and adorned with a map of the state on the collapsible stock - made legal after the expiration of the assault weapons ban in 2004. The Big Dipper from the state flag is etched on the magazine well behind a vented barrel guard.
The rifle is chambered in .50-caliber "Beowulf." It's the same caliber used by heavy machine guns, which can take down big game, and in war zones "can disable both motor vehicles and assailants with body armor," according to ammo manufacturer Alexander Arms' Web site.
Templar gun designer Bob Reynolds told the NRA's magazine that Palin had stood up for Second Amendment gun rights and "I just wanted to do something to give back."

it is not.
those heavy bullets cannot maintain the velocity for more than short ranges....
and my preferences are for M1 Garands, 1903
springfields and Trapdoor Springfields....nice big cases...
but if I was going into battle I would defer to at least a .308 size case for weight and volume carrying ability.
Now if I really wanted to carry a .50....it would be a semi-auto Barrett in .50BMG....now that's a rifle....
.50 Beowulf is not the exact same caliber used by heavy machine guns.

1800fps?! That must be a very hot load.
50 yard ballistics are in the range of 1800 fps at 2400 ft pounds of energy. Definite Blackie flattener, Definite Griz gun at short range.
Not nearly as powerful as most of the popular “bear” guns, but a nice little package to hang on your snow mobile and also popular in a roof clip on the super cub bushplanes.

I’ve never even held one. I would imagine with the light weight AR, it would have a good kick, physics being physics and all.

Jeez, anytime any idiot in the LSM sees .50 caliber, they think it means a .50 BMG. A .50 BMG would have a hell of a recoil in a 30” long rifle that weighs 6 lbs.
But that 50 Beowulf would kick butt against large game.

If I were going into battle and no considerations were taken in account(such as availability) other then sheer performance and weight it would be the 6.5 grendel. It can do anything the .308 can do and you can carry more of it.
The .50 BMG is one heck of a round and the Barrett company makes some fine rifles. So many guns...so little money.

I assume your talking about grains of water....a common method for determining internal space. the reason for the greater space is the blown out shoulder and neck to make the .50 a straight wall case...a .50 caliber heavy bullet needs greater powder space to just maintain velocity. as much as a .50 caliber is a thumper it is not a long range weapon. 2 of my favorite rifles are chambered for the .45-70 government round. My trap door springfield is loaded up to about half the velocity of my lever action marlin...the chambering in its original 19th century form is grossly underpowered considering the case space and of course if I were to accidental switch rounds I would blow my trapdoor and myself to kingdom come....
......the .50 beowolf is maximized and cannot go any faster than it goes now. with such a poor aerodynamic design and relatively slow velocity this round is one great close range thumper but not something to use if your fighting the kinds of battles you fight in Iraq where the ranges go out to the thousands of yards....it would have made an interesting round in Vietnam.
not an AR fan....I really dont know the difference between a 6.5 grendel and a 6.8 SPC Remington but both look head and shoulders above the 5.56. but except for carry ability I see the the .308 superior round and subscribe to Col. Cooper's aimed fire paradigm versus the "Spray and Pray" method made popular in vietnam. take aimed shots and you dont need so much ammo to carry. But I am set in my ways and will defer to the services for whatever they choose as long as they keep winning battles...just keep politicians out of the mix, like the whole M-16 debacle where the politicians made the determination what the grunts on the ground needed to carry.
That is the liberal gun grabber definition, not the true definition.
The military calls an assault weapon a gun that is capable of full automatic fire that uses a round of less power than a full battle rifle round.
The liberals want to expand that to any gun that goes bang.
As to the utility of this 50 cal (assualt rifle) it would be uncontrollable in FA fire, worse than the M14 whan it was made to go FA.
Lets change their argument and every time we see 'assault' we say 'defense' after all that's really what it is, a DEFENSE rifle.
My understanding was that while it functioned well, the concept did not confer much in the way of real advantages. The amount of ammo you can carry, for example, is greatly reduced. The 5.56 is actually very good for jungle fighting, though I am sure many have different opinions.
