Berkeley's City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to eliminate homeowner mandates from its climate action plan, in part because of an uproar from infuriated residents.
The plan required owners to upgrade their homes' energy efficiency, based on an independent audit of a home's windows, roof, appliances and insulation. The goal was for all of Berkeley's 23,000 homes and 25,000 duplexes and apartment units to reduce energy use by 35 percent by 2020.
Many homeowners vehemently protested the mandates, saying the cost to upgrade a typical drafty prewar Berkeley home would be astronomical.
Hills residents particularly fought the portion requiring white roofs, saying a white roof would reflect unwanted heat and light into the homes above.
The plan was amended to read:
"The plan does not create any mandates or requirements. Any recommended requirements in the plan must be approved by the City Council after a thorough review by commissions and community members."

They finally got too Berkeley for even Berkeley.
And the residents of this psycho city expected what? That is what you get when you give up your freedom to Utopians - less freedom. And they less freedom you have, the less freedom you are going to get. Because they will keep on taking it until they basically own you.
The Berkelites went bezerk about a nanny state overreach? Somebody needs to post that graphic of pigs flying!
So its OK for the hipppies and blacks to reject the ongoing, insane EnviroFascism.
What hapeens when white Chrisitan conservatives kick the green whore to the curb?
This is the most hilarious story I have been today. Enviro-whackohood for thee, but not for me, say Berkeleites. Wait til the cap in trade taxes kick in.
If they can't afford to live here, they should move.
Let's get some more Section 8 housing in here. Those people understand the importance of energy efficiency.
How pathetic. If a liberal can’t spend OPM, they won’t spend it. No windmills in Nantucket Sound, no energy efficiency in Berkeley, no licensing of transmission line rights-of-way to solar plants in California. They hypocrisy of the left knows no bounds.
This is indeed the funniest thing I will hear today.
The good councilpersons of Berkeley forgot one of the basic tenets of liberalism: Change the world but make the other guy pay for it.
Gee, even Berkeley has government energy mandate NIMBY sociailsts.
The schadenfreude, it burns!
The residents of Berkeley (the most reliably Marxist voters in America) reject climate-change mandates that come out of their own hides.
We’ll stand at the barricades fighting for Mother Gaia....as long as someone else pays.
Glorious.
Keep voting for ‘em Berkeley. You’re getting just what you deserve.
“Some in the crowd thought the plan did not go far enough and the city should set higher goals and stricter standards for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
These people obviously need a much bigger Forum, and should immediately apply for jobs in Obama’s EPA...
Didn’t you hear about that swine flew already?
These idiots still don't get it. They'd have been entirely copasetic with the mandates had they only applied to everybody else's house but theirs.
In related news, the citizens of Berkeley have voted that the energy efficiency mandates apply to the rest of the country.
Now that you are actually thinking about the reality of your phony green idealism, loony leftist NIMBYs, think it out to the next step. If it's going to cost you a fortune to combat "global climate change" in your own house, what do you think the same effort writ large will do to the entire US and global economy?
Don't stop thinking yet comrades!
I think this is a great sign that Americans are beginning to see through Global Warming scam and are rebelling against it, especially when the get the bill. Berkeley should be the most friendly territory for enviro-statist-wackos.
