After her son's failed presidential bid, 97-year-old Roberta McCain can let her guard down.
BY JAMES RAINEY
Reporting from Washington -- It had been more than a year in the making, this meeting between Roberta McCain and me.
The smart guys who managed her son's presidential campaign got all queasy at the thought of Roberta, unfettered, in a journalist's thrall.
I managed a few tantalizing phone calls with John McCain's outspoken mother, a column on my vain pursuit of an interview and a promise that the end of the presidential race would bring a chance for us to share some straight talk.
Roberta made good on her promise Monday, delivering a long-promised cup of tea, a tour of her history-laden Washington apartment and a rebuke of media blatherers who she feels put self above country.
. . . . .
Not that the conservatives are winning her heart either. "Some of them talk like such fools," she said.
She saw a glimmer of clarity in late February, when Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele took a shot at Rush Limbaugh, calling him an "entertainer" whose radio show could be "incendiary" and "ugly."
"It was the first smart thing I had heard anybody say about that . . . and the Republicans made him back down," Mrs. McCain said. "Why? Tell me why. He should have stuck to his guns."

Mrs. McCain, with all due respect, your son was the worst candidate the Republican party has ever had.
The McNut didn’t fall far from the tree.
...libs pushing the anti Rush the GOP has to change agenda.
The only good thing McCain did in his campaign was introduce Sarah Palin to the nation and world.
Well, anyone who’s made it to 97 has my respect and can say what she likes. Even if I disagree with her, and even if she did raise a war-hero-turned-RINO.
Keith Olbermann is uglier in one show than Rush has been in his whole entire career.
Steve Scully: This is a political question in terms of how he [John McCain] gets the nomination, but just from what you have seen, how much support do you think he has among the base of the Republican Party?Roberta McCain: I dont think he has any. I dont know what the base of the Repub - maybe I dont know enough about it, but Ive not seen any help whatsoever.
Scully: So can he then go on and become the nominee of this party?
McCain: Yes, I think holding their nose theyre going to have to take him.
Like mother, like son.
I felt the same as soon as it was written.
Almost sounds like Moma McCain is a freeper. :)
“The only good thing McCain did in his campaign was introduce Sarah Palin to the nation and world”
Amen.
But Keith has the politically correct kind of hate. It’s OK to hate if you hate the way the Democrats do. This kind of hate is good and exempt from any hate crimes legislation.
At least Dole ran against a popular incumbent. McCain ran against an empty foreign suit. Big difference.
She should learn from Sarah after her son left her out to dry, after vicious attacks, she did not rip Mclame. What is it with these Rino’s.
John, please go away and take Mom with you!
