GOP will miss Arlen Specter's prudence [only the RINOs will] [barf barf barf]
Politico ^ | 2009-05-08 | Douglas W. Kmeic

For years, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania has been excoriated by the GOP for his “unprincipled,” pragmatic decision making. Yet, like President Barack Obama, Specter has always been more attentive to the needs of those who sent him to Washington than to demands that he toe the party line.

It’s no surprise that the GOP now says Specter switched to the Democrats just to save his own skin. But it would stand Darwin on his head were senators unmindful of their political survival. No, the real question relates to the GOP’s survival. A party whose domestic policy consists of setting Americans against each other — and whose gray, vice presidential eminence thinks international legitimacy is found in the efficacy of torture — is, in the vocabulary of the time, not too big to fail. And it is failing badly.

Specter is not a flashy, youthful politician. His ways and manner are old school. Nevertheless, Specter deserves praise for his willingness to find workable solutions even if it means enduring the unrelenting criticism of those who see the world only through a distorting ideological lens.

The GOP will miss Specter’s prudence as it prepares to quiz Obama’s nominee to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter.

Douglas Kmiec has endorsed Barack Obama for president. Kmiec is a Republican who served in the Justice Department under President Reagan and the first President Bush. Until recently, Kmiec was co-chair of the Romney for President Advisory Committee on the Constitution and the Courts. In that capacity, he wrote a piece on Power Line explaining why he supported Romney.

Arlen Specter was prudent? About what?

Even the Bushes could not call some of his recent transformations “prudent”.

Douglas W. Kmiec no doubt sees Specter as a kindred figure of sorts looking not to be bound to the particulars of their declared allegiance.

Although a prominent Catholic law professor, Kmiec endorsed the pro-abortion Obama. After supporting Prop 8 in California, Kmiec now wants it interpreted so that marriage will be an entirely private matter with the state recognizing gay and straight civil partnerships.

Like Specter, Kmiec is unknowingly moving toward being a party of one, with views and positions coherent only to himself.

I may have to steal that from you.

If Arlen ever had any principles, like pro 2nd Amendment, he should still have them. If not, he is where he always belonged.

Of course Kmiec likes Specter, he’s pro-abortion after all and helped kill the Bork nomination.

I honestly don't remember Arlen's role in the Bork affair.

All I remember vividly was the Submarine Commander Kennedy roaring "Judge Bork's world will be (abortions in the back alley, etc).......".

And that stupid ass senator from Alabama, Howell Heflin, telling Bork that he didn't like his beard.

The whole thing was a travesty, and I thought the Submarine Commander was the principal prosecutor for the Dumbs.

So, apparently, Romney’s policies were closer to Zero’s than to McCain’s. That’s just plain scary.

Self identity crisis. Liberals love that.

Oh, I don’t think the GOP will miss him, and I think it is very nice that he is getting his comeupance from the democratic party he joined.

So sensitive that he knew he couldn’t make it through a pubbie primary. Whether he can survive a dumbo primary remains to be seen.

Only Charles Dickens could draw a character like Kmiec. He is the Uriah Heep of American politics.

Speaking of transformations, check out this Arlen Specter bobblehead, parodying his Pinocchio-esque transformation to a donkey.
