Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has alleged that elusive Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was a US operator who had tried to destabilise his late wife Benazir Bhutto’s government back in 1989.
In fact, as premier Bhutto had “warned America about Osama bin Laden in 1989 with a call to then US president George H. Bush”, Zardari said on NBC’s Meet the Press programme Sunday.
“She rang senior Bush and asked of him: ‘Are you destabilizing my government?’ because he (apparently referring to bin Laden) paid the then opposition $10 million to overthrow the first woman elected (prime minister) in an Islamic country,” Zardari added.
“So, we knew that he was your operator,” said Zardari responding to a question about bin Laden’s whereabouts.
“You’ll have been there (in Afghanistan) for eight years. (So) you tell me. You lost him in Tora Bora, I didn’t, I was in prison,” he countered when asked where bin Laden was before hurling the allegation at Washington.
Asked if Pakistan was actively looking for bin Laden, Zardari replied: “The world is looking for him and we are part of the world look-out brigade.”
Zardari also reiterated his belief that bin Laden is dead. “I have a strong feeling and I have reason to believe that because I’ve asked my counterparts in the American intelligence agencies and they have not heard of him since seven years.”
It’s almost crazy the charges and counter-charges that are tossed around these days.

Benazir Bhutto: The Taliban were actually students in university who decided to go back to Afghanistan after the Russians left. My reports were that the Taliban were being welcomed by the people and that they were building peace. Initially we thought the Taliban was a stabilizing force. My government was keen to establish ties with Central Asia, so we were quite pleased and we encouraged them initially.... We wanted to import wheat and export cotton to Central Asia and wanted a route that would give us access to Central Asia through Kandahar [where the Taliban is headquartered]. We were trying to bypass Kabul and establish an enclave in the south. The Taliban were supposed to give us safe passage.
... and then Benazhir Bhutto decided to trade nuclear weapons technology to North Korea.
Having a man this unhinged running Pakistan doesn’t bring me any comfort. Makes me long for the “good ‘ol days” of Musharraf.
I think it’s time to:
Forget Pakistan, it’s toast.
Try to wall off Afghanistan (mine the border, ten miles deep), in an attempt to keep the Taliban in Pakistan.
Wait until the civil war in Pakistan is over before taking any next steps.
Get the silo door hinges greased in the meantime.

Liberal/Leftist’s never ‘get it’. Our foreign policy should always start with what is in the best interests(security) of the United States. PERIOD. That might mean that sometimes we tolerate the Mushariff’s of the world or have to remove the Saddam’s of the world. The liberal/leftist’s idea of foreign policy is always ass backwards. They are only concerned with what is in their own political best interests and/or their utopian ideals of the world as it ‘should be’, according to their ideology(an unattainable,unsustainable utopian paradise).
Liberal/leftists never understand that a global utopia is not what the US government is charged with in our constitution.
