NEW YORK (AP) — A Roman Catholic archbishop who resigned in 2002 over a sex and financial scandal involving a man has written a memoir that describes how he struggled with being gay.

Archbishop Rembert Weakland, former head of the Milwaukee archdiocese, "is up front about his homosexuality in a church that preferred to ignore gays," Publisher's Weekly wrote in a review Monday.

The book, "A Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church: Memoirs of a Catholic Archbishop," is set to be released in June and is described by the publisher as a self-examination by Weakland of his "psychological, spiritual and sexual growth."

The Vatican says that men with "deep-seated" attraction to other men should not be ordained.

Weakland stepped down quickly after Paul Marcoux, a former Marquette University theology student, revealed in May 2002 that he was paid $450,000 to settle a sexual assault claim he made against the archbishop more than two decades earlier. The money came from the archdiocese.

Marcoux went public at the height of anger over the clergy sex abuse crisis, when Catholics and others were demanding that dioceses reveal the extent of molestation by clergy and how much had been confidentially spent to settle claims.

Weakland denied ever assaulting anyone. He apologized for concealing the payment.

In an August 1980 letter that was obtained by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Weakland said he was in emotional turmoil over Marcoux and signed the letter, "I love you."

Though in fairness, you do get a handful of scandal-causing priests who actually seem to be attracted to women.

If a priest has either heterosexual or homosexual tendencies he must be equipped by prayer and fasting to cast aside these temptations.

It's true that a homosexual should seek strength from God to resist homosexual urges. But it's normal for a man to want emotional and physical intimacy with a woman. That is,in fact,a gift from God Himself.

The homosexual element in the Catholic priesthood is no higher than in other professions where individuals are free to marry.

I'd wager the clothes on my back that you're wrong there.Enormously wrong.

The Homosexual Problem

MEDIA MONITOR | BY REED IRVINE AND CLIFF KINCAID | APRIL 12, 2002

“Gays have slowly crept into the clergy, bringing with them a propensity toward pedophilia and homosexuality.”

The sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests is a scandal. But it’s important to note that no evidence has been produced indicating that pedophilia among Catholic priests is higher than among other professions. Liz Trotta of the Washington Times says the real story is that the clergy in many different denominations and society at large have encouraged this scandal by dropping their moral standards and tolerating homosexuality.

Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington says reports indicate that 1.5 percent of the priests, a little more than one in a hundred, has been accused of such misconduct. He says, “Even the terrible statistics which have come out of Boston do not add up to two percent of the priests in that huge archdiocese. I wonder what profession or group of men or women has a lower rate than that?” He says if a person in a nondescript occupation abuses a minor, it’s reported on the inside pages, but when it’s a Catholic priest, it makes banner headlines.

Professor Philip Jenkins, who has written a book on the topic, says “there is no evidence that the rate of pedophilia among Catholic priests is higher than among other clergy or other professions.” Jenkins referred to a study in Chicago finding less than 2 percent of priests had been accused of such conduct.

Milwaukee has NO Archbishop now. Abp Dolan has been transferred to NY and we are awaiting the Pope to name a new Abp which may take 6 months. In the mean time the Archdiocese is being managed by an Auxilliary Bishop — William Callahan who is fairly new here.

Abp Emeritus Weakland left us in a heck of a mess with lawsuits threatening to bankrupt us and a seminary empty of students. Abp Dolan turned the seminary around and tried to solve the lawsuit problem the best he could, but we are facing big financial problems in the future.

He and his ilk were on a mission to destroy the church from within.

“Define “we”.Is it just your diocese...or parish? What’s the median age of priests in this country today?”

If I can chime in, we have seven just from our parish. They are all young men. We also some young women going into very orthodox orders in convents.

We also have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament which in every parish that this is happening vocations are exploding.

The parishes are starting to embrace the faith in full here and it shows in increased devotion.

We may be smaller in number, but I’d rather have a small number of faithful catholics than a large number of lukewarm CINOs.

The Catholic Church has as much as 33% to 50% homosexuals in their preisthood and higher. This is about 25 times higher than the number of homosexuals in the general public? 25 times.

So, the question is, why?

Is it because they know it’s wrong and think the Church is the place to deal with it?

A devoutly religious person who regularly engages in homosexual relations, with self justification, is an oxymoron. The terrible problem is that these people, in the spirit of this age, are being convinced that their actions are not really a sin, just as women are being told that an abortion is not murder.

How can a man or woman repent, if it is not “politically correct” to do so, and if they are being barraged with information which is designed to keep them from recognizing their sin?

>>Why is it that I read these days that our local seminary (the only one in Massachusetts,IIRC) has graduating classes consisting of three men? You may be overflowing with applicants in your neck of the woods but I believe the national...and worldwide....picture is *much* more bleak. <<

The real reason for this is making the laity “just as good” as a priest. Lessening the Priestly role.

In our parish, we have 275 Altar BOYS. Our lectern is away from the altar so women do not go up there. Our Priests are special. We have three.

In a modern parish, you have people running the show. No one has the respect for the Priest that they used to. If a Priest goes traditional, against the wishes of the people, he is subject to people running to the Diocese about him, or like in our area, putting up websites chastising what he does.

It’s a thankless job. Why would a man take all the crap connected with running a business, adding to that, the mass hysteria of “strong women” making it the pecking order of a hen house, when he can join the parish council and have the respect normally afforded a priest, WITH the wife and kiddies?

Any diocese that has gone orthodox, has gotten priests. Look at Lincoln Nebraska. Our parish has eight seminarians, two are being ordained this week. Go back to making Priests what they used to be and they will want to be Priests.

Because once gays get a foothold into any organization, and achieve some power, they work to protect themselves by hiring other gays and putting them in positions of power, and after awhile it's almost impossible to root them out. That's how the gay mafia has taken control in Hollywood.

You are from Massachusetts, where the leading Catholics are the Kennedys and the Kerrys. True Catholics are about as numerous there as they are in Turkey.

Exactly right. Besides, it’s not as if homosexual men don’t marry women.
