THE POPE STANDS UP (and walks out on Palestinian leader Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi)
NY Post ^ | May 12, 2009

In an action that spoke far louder than words, Pope Benedict yesterday walked out of an interfaith meeting in Jerusalem after the chief Islamic judge of the Palestinian Authority launched into an anti-Israeli diatribe.

The pontiff, on his first day in Jerusalem, did not realize at first that Sheikh Taysir al-Tamimi, speaking in Arabic, was condemning the "crimes of the Jewish state" and accusing Israel of having "slaughtered women, children and senior citizens."

But as soon as he was told the nature of the sheikh's tirade, he stood and left the meeting, which took place at Notre Dame church, before it had concluded.

It's not as if the organizers shouldn't have seen this coming: Back in 2000, Tamimi did the same thing during a visit by the late Pope John Paul II.

A spokesman for the Holy See later condemned the remarks, saying that

Let’s hope the entire audience gets up and walks out when the liar in chief speaks at OUR Notre Dame.

I’m sure some will, at least.

>>He said Tamimi, a familiar and fiery figure in Palestinian public life, had pressured the Catholic organisers to be allowed to speak and that the Jewish members would no longer take part in a long-standing, three-way interfaith dialogue until the sheikh was barred from attending.<<

Best to give “the devil” his due. Although by past posts, that might be difficult.

Some would have the Pope suffer the fool. For me, I’m glad he walked out.

Thanks for the link. From it we learn that Ratzinger shook hands with the guy after his speech, after sitting through the entire speech during which the muslim clerics cheered.

The speech was delivered in Arabic, without simultaneous translation, but after the pope was informed of the political nature of al-Tamimi's speech, he left the conference.

And somehow we're supposed to believe there was no simultaneous translation? Do you think that's logical in this day and age? You don't think someone was standing next to the pope translating for him, as is the norm in these types of situations if headphones aren't provided with translators?

Do you honestly think the pope would put himself in such a vulnerable position unknowingly? The guy could have said "death to all Christians" and Ratzinger would have nodded and shook his hand, just like he did.

Thanks again for the information.

I think that your general dislike of The Pope and all things Catholic means that if The Holy Father walked up and socked the guy, it wouldn’t be good enough for you. The Holy Father could have whipped a Holy slipper at him and put him into a chokehold and you’d still find a problem.

If the Jews don’t have a problem, why do you?

Your posting history speaks for itself.

There was no simultaneous translation because Tamimi was not a scheduled speaker. The Pope only has official translators, not people whispering in his ear. I work in the translation business, and translators at events like this do not “wing it.” They are given the prepared texts of the speeches, go over them so that they will provide quick and accurate translations, and do not leap up to provide a translation of somebody who is not on the list.

The Pope does not speak Arabic and had no way of knowing what was happening. He would have thought, obviously, that this was an approved speaker who somehow got left off the list, and since this was an ecumenical gathering with representatives of all the local religions present, there was no reason for him to suspect anything out of line.

Some Arabic-speaking clergy told the Pope the contents of the speech after Tamimi had finished and had gone over and shaken the Pope’s hand, and that was when the Pope left.

Tamimi walked over and shook the Pope’s hand when he was finished speaking. Then the Pope was informed of the content of the sheik’s speech and he left.

People need to start walking out on Obama BS Conferences, laughing all the way. That’s a double-whammy on The First Thug: he can’t stand being ignored and/or laughed at.

The personality traits of a psychopath.
