Newsweek Frets about Christian Influence on ‘Idol’ Voting
newsbusters ^ | May 12, 2009 | Colleen Raezler

According to Newsweek's Ramin Setoodeh, "American Idol's" Adam Lambert could "be heading home" due to those homophobic Christians that watch every week.

Lambert, Setoodeh wrote in a May 12 blog post, "has been called the best ‘Idol' singer in the history of the show, thanks to his Celine Dion-like pipes. But he's also one of the most controversial, thanks to his Marilyn Manson-like wardrobe and his (not-so) ambiguous sexuality."

Despite the fact that Randy, Simon and Paula all like Lambert, and he's garnered enough votes to compete in the semi-finals of "Idol," Setoodeh warned of a "possible roadblock" to a Lambert victory:

"Idol" is the No. 1 show on TV at least in part because it's so family-friendly, and it also appeals to a large demographic of Christian viewers. These are the same fans who made "High School Musical" and "Dancing With the Stars" huge TV hits. Many of "Idol's" previous winners - Jordin Sparks, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard - are devout Christians. Coincidence? Perhaps. But we don't know much about Lambert's faith, and that might hurt him with Christian voters. He could be extremely religious, but he's kept his religious beliefs quiet.

Setoodeh pointed out the religious background of Lambert's competitors, Danny Gokey and Kris Allens and further tipped off Lambert fans, "both have gotten substantial interest from Christian blogs and websites."

Apparently those people who read "Christian blogs and websites" also have no ear for talent. Setoodeh concluded, "Adam is still the best singer in the competition. But since Idol isn't really a singing competition - despite what Randy Jackson tells you every week - don't be too shocked if there's a shocker elimination this week."

I watched Idol religiously (pardon the pun) until this year. Just couldn’t get into it. Part of it was the new judge, another part was the inside view I got from a girl I know that auditioned.

If Kris gets the boot this week, his votes will go to Gokey.

Adam is still the best singer in the competition.

I'll never buy his CD. Too much of a "crying baby" style, with a little broadway torch singer sprinkled in. I'm fairly certain I'll buy an Allison Iraheta CD some day though. BTW, I own a Clay Aiken CD, so being a homo isn't the problem with Adam for me.

It doesn’t really matter who wins as all the top three have great careers ahead of them. In the recent past some of the runners up are doing four times the success as the actual winners. Carry underwood being the exception. She is doing about the best of any of the past winners. If Adam loses do you have any doubt that he will go on to a brilliant career? I don’t.

Every time a nonwhite gets voted off Idol, there are screams of "racism," no matter how many whites got voted off previously. If Adam gets voted off tomorrow, there will be screams of "homophobia," even though he made it to the top three. Shoot, if he makes it to the top two, but doesn't actually win, I bet they'll still whine.

I just roll my eyes at this crap anymore. The whiners have cried "wolf" too many times.

Adam is a screamer, and anyone who thinks he’s a better singer than Carrie Underwood is nuts.

This is exactly the reason I think Adam gets the boot tomorrow night. I think his audience has maxed out and with fewer contestants to split the votes, Adam should be out.

More Christian bashing. With no proof, just speculation, he pronounces that if one particular contestant is eliminated, it will be those evil Christians, a group who are not only terrible people, but also have no ear for music. Try replacing ‘Christian’ with ‘homosexual’, ‘Muslim’, or ‘African American’.

Reason #539 why the media pushing this as something we should actually CARE ABOUT is only dragging America’s culture down.

Newsweak's Ramin Setoodeh is critical of Christian blogs?

There couldn't be any bias in this story: Ramin Setoodeh reads like an Iranian name.

What a bunch of hogwash. If Christians were of such influence on the outcome and were out to get this kid how would it be possible that he is in the semi-finals?

It is the same crap from the hate America crowd...if Obama looses its because America is racist...if Lambert loses its because America is homophobic...etc. It couldn’t possibly be anything else.

Christian viewers have made “Dancing with the Stars” a huge hit? My good, Christian wife has banned me from watching that show because of the revealing costumes the women are wearing.

Didn’t Newsweek once consider itself a news magazine?

No matter what the critics say, and no matter how politically correct they want the Idol voting to be, the bottom line will come after the voting is all over and the show has ended. I predict that Adam Lambert will win. But, he won't be much of a seller in the record business. The people that do the buying, the teeny-boppers and the hero-worshippers aren't going to identify with Adam. Sorry, but the reality is a lot different from the reality show.

Adam sounds like any number of lead singers from 80s hair bands. He has that requisite 80’s scream down pat. When he sang “Whole Lotta Love” last week, it sounded just like my ex-boyfriend’s old band.
