U.S. Sen. John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate, today announced his endorsement of state Sen. Jeff Denham for lieutenant governor of California.
"He has a proven record of independence, integrity and fiscal responsibility as a state senator," McCain said in a release from Denham's office. "He also offers valuable life experiences as a successful businessman and veteran who has served his country admirably.
"As a farmer, business owner and legislator, Jeff Denham has worked hard to create and save jobs in California. He is a committed reformer who has aggressively promoted innovative ideas to restructure and modernize state government while cutting patronage jobs for political insiders.
"Jeff Denham is a fiscal hawk who has repeatedly received commendations from taxpayer groups for his strong opposition to tax increases. Jeff will continue working aggressively for taxpayers, and against government waste, as Lt. Governor.
"Jeff Denham demonstrated his independence by taking on the legislative leadership when they tried to pass unbalanced budgets. He is a strong opponent of pork-barrel politics and irresponsible government spending."
McCain also took note of Denham's 16 years of decorated military service on active and reserve status in the U.S. Air Force as well as his leadership on veterans issues as Chairman of the California Senate's Veterans Affairs Committee, "As a fellow veteran I am proud to support Jeff Denham. Jeff has a long history of service to his country and to his state. Jeff has demonstrated we can count on him to always be there for veterans and their families."
"I know Jeff Denham will never hesitate to take on the special interests or to do what he believes is right, regardless of the political consequences. That's why Jeff Denham will be an outstanding Lt. Governor for the people of California and why I am strongly supporting his candidacy," concluded Senator McCain.
Denham responded to McCain's endorsement by saying, "John McCain is an American hero who has served our country courageously and tirelessly as a soldier and as a statesman. I am deeply honored by his endorsement and grateful for his support. I share Senator McCain's passionate belief that government should work for the people and not the special interests by being more efficient, more accountable and more transparent. These are the ideals I will bring to the Lieutenant Governor's office."
I was an officer-seeker, I wouldn’t get near a California statewide office right now...wait until after the collapse.
I know there was more after that statement but that was enough for me to seriously question Denham as a candidate.
..well, I thought Denham was an OK guy, but with McCain plugging him, I guess I should double check that assumption.
What the hell is going on with McCain the loser thinking he has any gravitas to be endorsing all these people? Personally I think the most interesting race is going to be Florida since McCain is backing Crist and Jeb Bush is backing Rubio... I really hope McCain loses THIS race.
Isn't Denham the guy the dems were trying to recall because he voted against the budget deal?
Is he a Republican or a Democrat?
With a McCain endorsement, this needs to be asked.
SnakeDoc
Ping!
I have a sad feeling that we’re only going to see squishy-pubs in this race, too.
Well, even a broken clock.....
Are they sure it was McCain or was it the other Jeff Dunham and Walter? I'd rather have Walter, btw!
Isn’t he the guy with the puppets. He’s great! Peanut, Jose Jalapeno and especially Achmed the Dead Terrorist. I’d vote for him. What?! It’s not him? Nevermind.
Dang. It’s hard to get in a good joke around here.
Denham was among the “hall of shame” legislators in the last budget round.
His vote for Maldonado’s open-primary proposition was the deal-clincher for the big tax increases.
Had it not been for those votes, we wouldn’t have had the most massive tax increase in history.
And a LA style open primary will be the end of a two party system in California, IMO.

Which GOPers Supported The Largest Tax Increase In California’s History?
Denham helped clinch the budget deal this year, the one with massive tax increases and with an Open Primary attached.
See the link I just posted above.
But yes, Perata wanted him ousted for his budget votes the prior year. Perata had counted on him being a squish and he actually voted with the other Republicans.
I think McCain, with help from Cornyn, are going to impose themselves in a lot of elections in 2010.
I suspect that the Crist/Rubio scenario is about to play out in California, with the NRSC pushing Carly Fiorina onto the ballot for U.S. Senate instead of getting behind Chuck DeVore, a solid candidate(R). I expect to see Johnny Mac’s endorsement of both Crist and Fiorina.
Now do you see why out-of-staters are imposing themselves on AZ’s election? McCain is a disease that needs to be terminated.
IMO, squishy pub.
Like I’ve said all along. I truly dislike McCain... and his current actions are really pissing me off. But Simcox is not the man to bring him down. Too bad someone like Shaddegg doesn’t have the nerve to go after him. Another very interesting race is going to be Shurtluf v Bennett in Utah.. I have friends in Utah who think very highly of Shurtluf... but they were dising him on Redstate over immigration. What everyone needs to understand is Utah will not go against illegal immigration because of “the” church.... anyhow I am going to send money to Rubio and Toomey and Shurtluf. I am hanging up on the RNC, RNSC and RNCC.
as squishy as Abel? :-]
