Notre Dame Becomes a Symbol of Catholic Dissent
Inside Catholic ^ | May 18, 2009 | Deal Hudson

Posted on 05/18/2009 8:50:45 AM PDT by NYer

The "party's over" at Notre Dame, as the old Comden and Green song says:

The party's over
It's time to call it a day
They've burst your pretty balloon
And taken the moon away
It's time to wind up the masquerade
Just make your mind up the piper must be paid

Notre Dame chose to honor President Obama. Fr. Jenkins defended the choice with arguments that should make a freshman blush.  The mainstream media glossed over the widespread criticism, the withdrawal of Amb. Mary Ann Glendon, and ridiculed demonstrators, like Fr. Frank Pavone, praying at the university's gate.

But at the end the day, the party's over and Notre Dame will will pay for the piper for many years to come.

What is the price?

ND has become the symbol of dissent in the Catholic Church (a designation actually deserved by Boston College).

Many bishops will no longer support the institution and many prospective students and their parents will look elsewhere.  Without those students, and the goodwill of the bishops, ND will become even more secular than it already is.

Until Fr. Jenkins leaves, and the board membership is overhauled, ND has destroyed its relationship with thousands of alums and hundreds of significant donors.  Millions will be lost by the university over the next decade.

The saddest thing of all, and the most tragic, Notre Dame has committed a scandal that, for the time being, has seriously divided and weakened the evangel of the Catholic Church.

The commencement itself, if you watched it, was a spectacle of non-stop self-congratulation, supercilious flattery, and scripted self-justification.  Eloquence was not to be found, though every inane claim to the moral highground received thunderous applause, until even the robed dignitaries placed carefully behind Obama began to look bewildered. Except for Fr. Jenkins, of course, whose face beamed with the delight of a boy who had avoided punishment for coming home with a failing report card.

I recommend everyone put this behind them and pay attention to the meeting today between President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House. The president is far better on the issue of Israel and Palestine than he is on the Catholic Church and its teaching on life issues.

I've had a sort of detached view of this whole Notre Dame "scandal" story with Barack Obama.

The simple truth is that Notre Dame hasn't been a Catholic institution in decades. It's basically a large secular corporation that owns a mediocre football team and the copyright on a logo of a silly leprechaun with clenched fists.

There would not have been so much a problem with N.D. inviting Obama as POTUS to speak at the commencement. The problem lay in honoring him with an honorary doctorate.

The Catholic Church has said that Catholic universities cannot bestow an honor upon someone who is opposed to Catholic doctrine. Obama's support for abortion, partial birth abortion, infanticide, embryonic stem cell research, etc. clearly marks him as someone who is opposed to Catholic doctrine. Because of this, the administrators of N.D., as a Catholic university, violated their responsibility to the Church. If they hadn't bestowed an honor upon him, it would be more difficult to maintain this. I think, though, that just asking him to speak there was extending to him an unmerited honor.

I can imagine Obama bestowing the Medal of Freedom on Osama bin Laden, justifying it completely in terms of process: Through his actions Osama really made Americans aware of the value of freedom; Osama worked very, very hard and poured his own funds into the venture against great odds; he risked his life for its success, in spite of being disabled with severe kidney malfunction. Hard work, self-sacrifice for an ideal, leading to an increased awareness of freedom. How should we NOT give the Medal of Freedom to someone who has accomplished all this?

Because you don't honor someone who is trying to destroy the institution bestowing the honor.

You forgot that Fr. Jenkins is madly in love with HolyO and his speech was a slap in the face to all those who believe in the Catholic Church doctrines, and those of us non-Catholics who share that belief...both Jenkins and HolyO were such hypocrites in their speeches, that I could see a movie of the week being made over this mess—Jenkins talks about how we need to keep the lines of communication open...cut to praying protesters being snatched up and zip tied and dragged off to jail...HolyO talks about how we need to listed to both sides of the abortion issue, just because those who oppose it are wrong, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be listened to...cut to Norma M. being arrested and taken off to jail...etc etc etc...

It was absolutely horrifying to hear the approval and applause and standing ovations from nearly every person in that auditorium yesterday...Jesus is weeping that mankind, after all these millenium, STILL will sacrifice the unborn to Molech/HolyO/Jenkins! :*(

I would really like to know what EVER made Notre Dame a Catholic university in the first place:

- Mandatory mass attendance?

- Required courses in Catholicism?

- Weekly confessionals?

The mere fact that it was “run” by the Catholic Church is a very loose definition of a true Catholic University.

Obama’s appearance, let alone the bestowal of an honorary degree, at a university named for the Mother of God is unquestionably a disaster of the first order, but how “Catholic” has Notre Dame ever been, even in its glory days?

I don’t disagree with you on that.

I read the transcripts but couldn’t stand the idea of watching the video.

This is war, with Obama as the agitator who brought it to a head, and Jenkins as the traitor who gave him that opportunity.

The Church now needs to make it very clear to all that Notre Dame does not represent what the Church stands for.

what did you people expect from a MUSLIM?

My question is ‘ is it ok to spit on him and call him a baby killer?’

it was ok for the enemy in the 60’s to do it to our returning soldiers.

They have been exposed.

It is good that the faithful now know the enemy a bit better.

Thank you! I heart Alan Keyes!

I hadn’t been aware that the Vatican DID address this issue—time will tell if they will follow-through and reprimand/(excommunicate?) Jenkins and ND for this outrageous, egregious flaunting of moral relevance.

Thanks, I just watched Sean’s interview with Ambassador Keyes that you linked to.

Did you catch that moment when Obama came in and KISSED Fr. Keyes on the cheek?

It reminded me of the Kiss of Judas—except in this case we witness two Judases kissing each other as they conspire at the attempted destruction of the Church.

Someone should make a You-Tube video out of that.

BO must be real proud of himself. He got elected POTUS with no decent record or even presenting his qualifications, the world falls at his feet, and now a prominent representative of one of the world’s biggest and oldest religions has just chucked his principles in order to honor him. Now I see how Hitler did it.

This is so sickening....and dangerous.

Some of us tried to get Drudge to change that “silence of the Vatican” headline yesterday, which he got from Time Magazine, since it really was not true. Unfortunately he wasn’t listening or didn’t understand the matter.

The Vatican has spoken out very clearly on this matter, and the local bishop has spoken out very clearly, but Fr. Jenkins has closed his ears to it—and Obama is guiding the propaganda campaign through the media. That is part of the scandal.

Actually, the Vatican and popes have addressed this issue for many, many years. I don’t know that they can say it better than “unspeakable crime”. Fr. Jenkins has not heard it.
