WASHINGTON – Sen. Robert C. Byrd, 91 and the longest-serving senator in history, was hospitalized last Friday with a temperature spike evidently caused by a minor infection, his office announced Monday.

Byrd, a West Virginia Democrat, "is being treated with antibiotics, responding well and is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days," the office said in a statement.

Byrd has been in Congress since 1952 and was first elected to the Senate six years later.

It’s not like anybody below Biden will take over. Unless Biden and Obama are taken out at the same time. That’s why it surprised me to see Obama and Biden out for a burger together.

If Biden moves up, he picks a new VP, it’s not like Pelosi moves up into the VP slot.

Armageddon could happen and that still will not move Nepolitano any further up the list.

The W.V. governor, although Dem, is supposedly an NRA member and pro-life. If Byrd kicks it, it would be interesting to see who he appoints.

I'd like to let him know right now that I'm not interested in the job. I really have trouble imagining why anyone would leave this beautiful state to go live in DC.

The common gossip here for the last three governors is that they would resign, have the Senate President ascend to the Governor's office and appoint the newly resigned governor to Byrd's seat. I do believe that Joe Manchin has asperations in this direction.

That’s a pretty putrid list...ugh..

Sure is:

1) Plagiarist Idiot

2) Lying traitor, who thinks "her job" as minority leader was to get her party in control of Congress at the expense of our troops and their mission.

3) Doddering Senile old man whose only purpose in life is to get reelected.

4) Hillary.. Whitewater, Ron Brown, Fort Marcy Park'nuff said

5) Living, more or less, example of the Peter Principal. ...

And the most logical choice for VP is obviously the runner-up democrat candidate, Hillary!™

He’s more qualified than any of the three above him, but that’s not a very high bar.

The joke around here is that he’ll appoint himself! It’s a pretty well-worn rumor in the State that Joe Manchin covets Byrd’s Senate seat...Manchin’s more of a conservative Democrat; unfortunately, he has a bad habit of nepotism.

Good Luck Old Man (and I say that w/ Respect), they really don't make 'em like you anymore.

The guy has caused me quite a few laughs over the years! I always think of Byrd when Cartman starts a rant on South Park.

Well, Nepolitano might move up if Biden were to get it.

Doesn't the 25th Amendment provide relief if the President is deemed
Mental Unstable?

There might be two Paul Wellstone funerals this year if Byrd and Teddy both go.

I wish him well. At times I have hated him,but he redeemed himself in my eyes when he sent the Kenyan Marxist a letter and told him he was abusing his executive power. He is believes the Constitution matters and he a Christian. Beliefs matter more to me than party.

Indeed he believes the constitution matters. And I wish he were younger so that he could give those in the senate that would ignore it their comeuppance as he used to do. I wish him a quick recovery.

Crap, nothing more sobering than looking at that succession list. Absolutely void of anyone that would seem right to lead this country.

Also, I’m amazed over what Secretary has priority over others. The leader of the HHS would be POTUS before the leader of the Homeland Security (that’s not an endorsement of either person).
