President Barack Obama will issue new vehicle emission standards and pair them with a broader goal of reducing pollution, marking the first time limits on greenhouse gases will be linked to federal standards for cars and trucks.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the administration will raise fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2016, four years earlier than federal law requires.

Officials familiar with the administration's discussions say Obama will unveil the new standards on Tuesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement had not been made.

California, 13 other states and the District of Columbia have urged the federal government to let them enact more stringent standards than the federal government's requirements. The states' regulations would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent in new cars and trucks by 2016.

Isn’t it the right of the States to determine this? Where does it state in the Constitution that the feds have the right to demand this. Just as our water rights......they belong to the States....not the feds.

Does a president have the authority to set such standards. And, if so, from where does he derive it??

Just curious!!

It's right there emanating from one of the penumbras.

I read in a car mag this morning (Road and Track June ‘09 issue) that California intends to further raise the fuel economy standards via their ability to raise CO2 emissions regulations. Supposedly, by that same time, if the auto makers abide by their pending rules, it would require an average fuel economy over 40mpg across the line...

And when vehicles cost twice their current price, come equipped with batteries and other systems that no-one can work on, much less the hazardous materials involved that will fill landfills and create more pollution in the long-term, and all the other ills (like insanely small and lightweight autos that are squished from hitting much more than a pothole or a low speed collision with a shopping cart...

Before the automobile, California had smog. But they get to decide the entire country’s rules and regulations.

And we wonder why automakers are dying...

only way to do that is smaller engines and lighter vehicles. and that means they just got significantly less safe.

but since BHO owns GM now, he can force them to build whatever kind of car he wants.

This is supposed to be implemented in conjunction with the move to legalize millions of illegal aliens in this country. The whole purpose of this two-pronged initiative is to mandate higher fuel mileage standards while at the same time “normalizing” a new underclass whose sole purpose will be to buy crummy little fuel-efficient cars. This way our American-born consumers will still be able to drive their SUVs, minivans, pickup trucks, etc. even as fuel mileage standards rise substantially.

Technically, yes, this should be a state by state issue. But guess what... the US Constitution means absolutely nothing now. States' rights died with the Civil War.

Looks like “his highness” will not be going anywhere since not one of his fleet to transport vehicles can come close to 35MPG. Maybe some good will come out of this.

No, this is all about destroying the middle class - the poor will get mass-transit subsidies and the rich (I'm talking about the elitist rich like celebrities and liberal politicians, not the hard-working rich) will still have their private jets and limos and won't be affected by this crap.

All Republicans should be screaming bloody murder over this and taking to the airwaves.

He has no authority under the Constitution to undertake this. We need to arouse people to stop this madness.

Accurate but irrelevant. The Federal Government is in charge of the very air you exhale.
