Science Fiction as Political Allegory: the upcoming "V" reboot
SciFi Wire ^ | 5/20/09 | Vanity

So you may have heard that ABC is doing a remake of the 80s television miniseries, "V".

Trailer is at the link above.

What's interesting is the angle: Devotion is the weapon, a carefully crafted message from the Visitors of Change and Hope. And a good-looking, charismatic spokeperson, with demands for a perfectly controlled image.

I wonder if ABC realizes JUST how subversive it is, especially as the bloom comes off the Administration. It's even identified by a single letter.

And, of course, the bringers of Change and Hope are hiding their true face, and have sinister ambitions.

Sound familiar ???? (evil grin)

Can they repackage it as “O”?

Well, they could call it “O” but that would be too obvious.

It is less veiled than we are hinting at.. they even talk about the aliens wanting to bring ‘hope...’ and we should ‘..embrace their change’..

As long as we're rebooting all things 70's and 80's, I'd really like a reboot of They Live. It is still appropriate to our time, maybe even more so today.

Save it, burn it to DVD, rip it to your hard drive.

ABC has a history with minis like this (”Path to 9/11”, “Amerika”). It’ll air once and be buried forever.

I’m not falling for it. Sci-fi channel is an appendage of NBC Universal. There’s got to be a twist where they blame conservatives or Christians for something.

Awesome!
But will it feature Robert Englund?

It all makes sense now! Obama is an extraterrestrial reptile! Rip some of his skin off, like in the original movie, to expose his true identity!

The original V was modeled after the 1935 political book “It can’t happen Here”

Here is it’s plot from Wikipedia:

Berzelius “Buzz” Windrip, a charismatic but power-hungry politician, is elected President of the United States on a populist platform, promising to restore the country to prosperity and greatness. Once in power, however, he becomes a dictator, outlawing dissent and putting his political enemies in concentration camps. As Windrip dismantles democracy, most Americans either support him wholeheartedly or reassure themselves that fascism cannot happen in America (hence the book’s title).

One of the few who openly oppose Windrip’s regime is journalist Doremus Jessup, who writes editorials decrying the state’s abuses of power. Shad LeDue, head of the state police and Jessup’s former employee, terrorizes Jessup, eventually putting him in a camp. He also goes after Jessup’s family, attempting to seduce Jessup’s daughter, Sissy. Eventually, however, Ledue falls out of favor with Windrip, who puts him in the same camp as Jessup. Against Jessup’s protestations, the other prisoners gang up on Ledue and murder him.

While Jessup languishes in prison, Windrip’s hold on power begins to weaken; the economic prosperity he promises has not materialized, and more and more people are fleeing to Canada to escape his government’s brutality. Eventually, Windrip’s lieutenants stage a coup and exile him to France. In the ensuing power vacuum, they fight among themselves for control, setting the stage for the regime’s self-destruction.

With help from a sympathetic guard, Jessup escapes from the camp, rejoins his family, and goes to Canada join a resistance movement.

“V” had it’s moments. For a kid at the time, it was interesting to watch.

You’d never be able to do it justice today. It is just to Awesome on its own. You can’t outdo “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I’m all out of bubblegum. “

It is going to be on ABC Network, not the Sci-Fi Channel.

Years ago, there was an article by the author of the story They Live was based on about “The Science Fiction Attitude”. He purposely wrote the story about a character with no name, no family, no background, and so on just to show that a science fiction idea and some attitude could carry a story.
