Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks unknowingly kicked off a firestorm in 2003 when she told an audience she was embarrassed George W. Bush was a fellow Texan. Her criticism of the president prompted outrage from conservatives and, in the following days, a movement formed to have the group pulled from the airwaves.
Organizing this effort was Free Republic, one of the Web's largest conservative sites, which distributed the contact information of music stations and encouraged members to demand the Dixie Chicks be dropped from playlists.
However, fast-forward six years to Barack Obama's election, and Free Republic has a different take on the White House.
The site, whose members previously declared the harmless stage banter of a country singer "treason," now hosts numerous threads advocating secession of states from the union.
Free Republic also promotes, to the top of its discussion forums, posts spreading the long-discredited idea that Obama is secretly not an American citizen and that his birth certificate is a forgery.
Sadly, this is typical of the bizarre new tone of conservatives.

don’t forget secession..last I heard that was being bantered about by actual things called “States” (NOTE TO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT: A “state” is one of those 50 supposedly independent entities which make up the “United States”)..we simply discuss the merits, or lack thereof, of such a course of action..no one here has the ability to actually make it happen..

Uh oh.
Well, I didn’t do it. Not even sure it’s true. However, considering how the Dems kept saying Bush was an illegitimate President in his first term, I see no reason to discourage others from questioning the legitimacy of the currect office holder.
