"Tax Audits Are No Laughing Matter" (Wall Street Journal, May 18 2009) reports that Barack Obama made a "joke" about having people who cross him audited and harassed by the Internal Revenue Service. Before anyone accuses us of lacking a sense of humor, we remind our readers that a teenager who made a joking threat to the President on Facebook was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service, and most people know what will happen to them if they joke about hijacking or blowing up an airplane while they are in an airport.

Mr. Obama has been accused of not appreciating the importance of financial capital to the proper functioning of the economy. But ill-chosen remarks like his ASU audit threat suggest that he also doesn’t appreciate the role of moral capital. That, too, is essential to the proper functioning of a modern economy.
Barack Obama is morally bankrupt.
Who says it was a joke?
