Hard cover books got really expensive, I’ve decided that I can wait a year for the paperback to come out for many series that I had been following.

Speaking of Capt. Phillips, I am so surprised we haven’t seen him on the talk show circuit. His acts truly were heroic; he put his life on the line to save those of his crew. And he endured five days or so with those murderous thugs.

Not at all to disparage Capt. Sullenberger (the pilot who landed his plane in the Hudson), but Sully’s heroics did not put his own life in danger, and lasted mere minutes. I don’t understand why what Phillips did was not a bigger deal - why the media doesn’t see that much glory in what he did, which I think was extremely brave!

We have a friend whose book is/was published by Amazon.com.

She was ignored or abused by the so called established book publishers. Her book is scheduled for release the middle of next month.

Amazon people treated her very well from the beginning to the upcoming publication.

The left’s control of the book stores and publishing is being decimated monthly due to their arrogance and now the economic meltdown. I haven’t bought a book from a lefty books store for over a decade. I had no tears when two local left wing books stores closed their doors and a national outfit closed their local. They never carried conservative books and sometimes laughed when we asked for a Limbaugh or Thomas Sowell book.

The biggest problem for books is simply this:

Paperback $8 ti $9, hardback $25 or more.

Your prices are to the point where picking up a book, even a paperback requires a second thought. While I’m willing to spend it on a known and proven author, I’m not dropping a ten spot on someone I’ve never heard of before “to give it a try”.

They need to lower the retail prices, at least for the paperbacks.. they’ve jumped rediculously in past few years.

"The future."

Has arrived if this -- "In February, the William Morris Agency failed to find any takers for a Britney Spears memoir." -- occurred. ;^)

Seriously. Think of it this way. What could someone write in a book about Britney that hasn’t already been posted on the internet?

"Hard cover books got really expensive..."

And how!!

*Just* went to Amazon 5 minutes before reading your comment.
Wanted the hard cover version of an excellent book I'm presently reading, a gift for someone I know come Christmas.
Soft cover: $12.00
Hard cover: $49.00.
Unreal.

It's not just a financial issue, it's a SPACE issue - you can shelve three paperbacks in the same space a hardback takes up. I'm getting hardbacks from the library, then if I still want it when it comes out in paperback, I'll pick one up using my Borders coupon.

Seriously?
Let's see, hmmmmm.

OK.
Her morals? (Of course she hasn't any. None, nada)
Her fashion sense? ( wink-wink)
Her hair style of choice? ( assuming bald qualities)

You're right abb, you're always right. {g}

Just speculating here - he’s made his pile and is enjoying spending it. While he was active, he was really prolific - a lot of very hard work.

I recall that his last novel, which was about Ryan’s son, came about because at the time he still owed his publisher one more book under the contract, but he was also in the middle of his divorce, and his soon-to-be ex wife was going to get 50% of everything that had sprung from the time they were living together..i.e..the Jack Ryan books..but a “new” novbel..featuring the president’s son...would be exempt from this..so, to spite his ex, and keep some cash..he cam out with the new hero..

It's not just a financial issue, it's a SPACE issue - you can shelve three paperbacks in the same space a hardback takes up.Books are like gases, They expand to fill all of the available space.

My house used to be a mess with them. I am in the process of moving to strictly electronic books. New on the market this month - a thin seven inch linux tablet with a ten hour battery life.

Not that all of the black and white Electronic Paper readers with two weeks worth of battery life aren't great too.

Newspapers are bulky to carry, and hold so little information comparatively.
