Alameda school board adopts plan to halt anti-gay bullying

ALAMEDA — School district leaders have approved lesson plans for kindergartners through fifth graders that aim to curb anti-gay bullying. Trustees voted 3-2 on Tuesday to adopt the Safe Schools curriculum, which supporters say will help children of gay parents feel welcome at school and help end anti-gay teasing and bullying on the playground. The lessons also aim to provide a safe environment for children to learn, as well as to offer a framework for teachers to break down stereotypes and teach kids about different types of families. "The need for this is real," said Beth Kromer, a fourth-grade teacher at Ruby Bridges Elementary School. Brian Harris, a 16-year-old student at the Alameda Community Learning Center, told trustees that he has been called anti-gay epithets on campus. "I have been harassed by other students in the classroom and I have even begun to consider just stopping and giving up on life," Harris said. Opponents of the curriculum said it would undercut parents' rights to teach their children about relationships and sexual orientation, and that it pushed a political agenda without addressing ways to help other groups who may be singled out at school. Trustee Trish Spencer, who voted no, said she was concerned that lessons about other vulnerable students were not on the table. But Superintendent Kristen Vital said the district will be developing a guide to help teachers deal with other types of bullying — such as racism or mocking someone's religious beliefs — over the next few weeks. The entire curriculum then will be reviewed, Vital said.

There was a related thread last week, a Fox news story that this curriculum was under consideration. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2256300/posts

Here is a link to the proposed curriculum: http://www.eqforall.com/proposed-lgbt-curriculum.html

As I posted last week, in this curriculm, a married man and woman, and their biological children are not included in the definition of a family.

From the proposed curriculum’s Vocabulary Words: (http://www.alameda.k12.ca.us/LGBT/Vocabulary%20Words.pdf)

"Family: a group of people living together and functioning as a single household.

Blended Family: When two separate families join together to live as one single family unit.

Divorced Family: When the parents in a family are no longer married. The children live with one or the other of the parents in an agreed upon decision.

Mixed Family: When two or more cultures and ethnicities join together to form one family.

Single Parent Family: When only one parent raises the children in a family"

I do not understand how such a one-sided curriculum can be enacted. But as the article above states, it has been enacted. The justification for the curriculum was to curb anti-gay bullying. How much anti-gay bullying really exists in kindergarten through fifth grade? If it does exist, isn't it the responsibility of the school principals and teachers to correct the problem as a discipline issue?

If there are any freepers in Alameda, I'd like to hear how this issue is perceived in your area.

This is discriminatory. The school should halt ALL bullying.

Mixed Family: When two or more cultures and ethnicities join together to form one family.

I'd wager that overwhelming majority of non-immigrant families in America are "mixed".

“This is discriminatory. The school should halt ALL bullying.”

Yeah, apparently the nerds of the school are still fair game.

Oh, and no more games of “Smear the Queer”

Exactly. I got called “fag**t” in elementary school by older kids who (like me) probably didn’t even know what that word meant. (I guess they ended up being wrong!)

Their point was “bullying,” not specifically “anti-gay bullying.”

If Homosexuality was truly about the actions of “consenting adults in private” and nothing but, the kindergarteners wouldn’t even know anything about it.

Someone should write a book about the loving relationship between Rover and any stray human’s leg.

Why don’t parents demand schools focus on academics, do they have any idea how much money goes to the “pet-projects”.

“This thread is gay.

No, you can but you have to spell it “ghey” to remove any homosexual references to be more sensitive. lol

We need anti gay bullying laws.

It’s about time they did something about Perez Hilton.

At what point will people at large recognize that the natural reaction to aberrant behavior, whether accepted or not, is the condemnation from the majority group? Children at any age will identify aberrant behavior and question it rather than accept it. This is not wrong, it is part of society. The bullying is society telling the person that their behavior is not acceptable.

If the scout master, priest, or stranger is in the eyes of a child, gay because of their willingness to participate in aberrant behavior shouldn't the children object? Shouldn't they declare it non-normal? Shouldn't they react to it in the same way the left deals with discrimination? With their non-acceptance?

This is the excuse liberals use to teach kids about homosexual sex and force them to find it lovely and natural for their own lives.

First they have to explain what a homosexual is so they kids will know who not to bully...or who to submit to!

Man, those were the days...back in grade school we played that. Got bloodied a few times. Of course that was also back in the day when the school's monkey bars were built over the asphalt parking lot.

bullying is part of nature.
