There is new information today surrounding a shoot-out between Mexican soldiers and cartels in Nuevo Laredo.

According to preliminary reports, one soldier is dead but Nuevo Laredo officials have not confirmed that. Meanwhile, local law enforcement is receiving some intelligence about the shoot out.

"What my information is saying is that there were four cartel members confirmed killed in that shoot out."

The incident occurred in Nuevo Laredo on Avenida Colosio. Mexican soldiers put up a roadblock after trying to pullover a white SUV who looked suspicious.

That’s when both sides opened fire on each other.

According to Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar this shootout comes with no surprise.

"We have heard in the past that there were going to be some confrontations. Unfortunately it’s happening. The Cartel members don't want to give up their turf."

In the recent months Mexican soldiers in Nuevo Laredo have been under attack. Just a few months ago, a massive protest against them blocked traffic at international bridges here and in other border towns. Hundreds of people showed up complaining about the soldiers saying the community did not wanted them anymore.

Mexican authorities believe the protests were organized by the cartels.

Sheriff Cuellar says they are the only ones that can keep the peace.

"The Mexican army are basically the only forces that can stand up to the cartels."

The shootout just across our border has many worried, but law enforcement officials say they don't want to alarm the community.

"I know that back in 2004, 2005 and maybe 2006 we did have some problems."

"To prevent the same scenario that happened a couple of years ago. All law enforcement agencies are working together to prevent the border violence from spilling over."

"If I may say we are better prepared than we were back in 2004."

Mexican federal police following the shootout seized eight high-powered rifles and six grenades as evidence. No law enforcement agency from Nuevo Laredo including the Mexican army has commented on the shootout.
