President Barack Obama has laid down his ground rules for the debate over Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. The big question now is whether Republicans agree to play by rules that neither Mr. Obama nor his party have themselves followed.
*****SNIP*****
Ground Rule No. 1, as decreed by the president, is that this is to be a discussion primarily about Judge Sotomayor's biography, not her qualifications. The media gurus complied, with inspiring stories of how she was born to Puerto Rican immigrants, how she was raised by a single mom in a Bronx housing project, how she went on to Princeton and then Yale. In the years that followed she presumably issued a judicial opinion here or there, but whatever.

If so, perhaps we can expect her to join in opinions with the wise and richly experienced Clarence Thomas. That would be the same Justice Thomas who lost his father, and was raised by his mother in a rural Georgia town, in a shack without running water, until he was sent to his grandfather. The same Justice Thomas who had to work every day after school, though he was not allowed to study at the Savannah Public Library because he was black. The same Justice Thomas who became the first in his family to go to college and receive a law degree from Yale.
By the president's measure, the nation couldn't find a more empathetic referee than Justice Thomas. And yet here's what Mr. Obama had to say last year when Pastor Rick Warren asked him about the Supreme Court: "I would not have nominated Clarence Thomas. I don't think that he was a strong enough jurist or legal thinker at the time for that elevation."

RE: Sotomayor Qualifications
Dear Mr. President,
Up yours.
Sincerely,
WCF
“Obama is a despicable cur.”
I’m not allowed to say what I want or I’d be banned and probably arrested by the Gestapo.
Add my name to that little letter.
Why is living in public housing a virtue to be extolled at every opportunity. I was raised in a one-income family of 10 children. We never took one penny from the government. At the end of the month, you could tell, there was no money left for food—we would have spinach and egg casseroles for a few days.
We all went to catholic schools, where in high school we all had part-time jobs to defray the tuition. My sister worked in the office, my other sister worked in the bookstore, and I worked washing dishes during my lunch time. We all babysat on weekends to pay for our bus money.
So how is it that sucking off the public tit is more admirable than working hard and doing part-time jobs or (gasp) doing without when you can’t afford something.
So basically it comes down to “We can bork your nominees. You have to be nice to ours.”
Sotamayor is as just as qualified to sit on the Supreme Court as Obama was to be President of the Harvard Law Review.
Your story is admirable and I congratulate you and your family. But this woman is the poster child for government. She shows that if you live off of the government teat, you too can be a success. They are going to trumpet her from the mountain tops because, in their minds, she is a government success story. Who cares if she’s not that smart or that her legal rulings are never on point? She’s a minority whose mother lived off of other taxpayers and she succeeded.
You, Clarence Thomas, and others like y’all did it yourselves. You showed the same fortitude that our founding fathers showed. You showed personal responsibility and independence and we can’t have that. If everyone did what your family and the family of Clarence Thomas did...then government wouldn’t need all these programs that keep them in power.
Um, just because obama says we cannot talk about her doesn’t mean we have to obey. He is NOT god. He is NOT emperor. He is NOT king. He is just a skinny academic prof who acts like he knows what he’s doing.
The Emperor Has No Clothes was written for such a time as this.
Bravo!
Sotomayor thinks Supreme Court decisions should be based on a judge’s personal feelings and prejudices, giving “extra credit” to those who are poor and persons “of color”. I think she’s made her bias rather obvious in public statements.
Her attitude will undermine the Constitution, since it does not provide for special consideration of anyone’s case based on race, color, creed or income. She will undermine the rule of law, applying instead arbitrary and inconsistent personal attitudes.
The Republicans of course will be totally inept in making a case for why she is a very bad choice, and she will replace Souter on the Court.
For a good description of how the Constitution has already been shredded by the Court’s own decisions, read “The Dirty Dozen” by Levy & Mellor. (It’s about 12 Supreme Court decisions.)
Since it has been established that Latinas are inherently wiser than the rest of us, doesn’t conscience dictate that the sitting justices resign so that America can benefit from having an all Latina high court:
Chief Justice -
Sonia Sotomayor
Associate Justices -
Salma Hayek
Charo
Jessica Alba
Daisy Fuentes
Rita Moreno
Rosie Perez
Raquel Welch
Shakira
Admittedly, the associate justices lack legal backgrounds, but their rich experience as Latinas should more than compensate.
There is actually only one piece of recorded paper that I have seen (a copy of) regarding 0bama, from a madrassa.
No hospital records.
No college records.
No marriage license.
No legal license.
No professorial papers or publications of any kind.
No court documents of public record.
No transcripts of court appearances.
No hospital records/conversations...not even his blood type.
No senate filings.
No congressional filings.
I have not seen a picture of him with his baby girls as a proud father, with his grandmother in Hawaii when he was an adult, on vacation, with college chums.
Nothing. At all.
Nothing.
Most liberal judges base their decisions on such a criteria but they are smart enough to not say it in public. It’s just another example that this woman is a few fries short of a Happy Meal.
