Republican leaders on Capitol Hill are rushing to contain racially tinged rhetoric in the debate over President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, fearing that attacks emanating from some conservatives opposed to appellate court Judge Sonia Sotomayor could damage GOP prospects among women and the rapidly growing Hispanic population.
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said today he was "uneasy" over allegations by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and talk-show host Rush Limbaugh that Sotomayor is racist.
Sessions, who lost a 1986 bid for a federal judgeship amid concerns over his own racial sensitivity, said Republicans should focus on Sotomayor's legal record to try to divine what sort of a Supreme Court justice she would make.
"I'm uneasy," Sessions said in a 30-minute interview in his office in the Russell Senate Office Building. "I don't think that's good rhetoric. The question is, has the judge gone too far or not, given the established law of the land?"
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, also condemned the remarks by Gingrich and Limbaugh, noting that "neither one of these men are elected Republican officials."
"I think it's terrible," Cornyn said in an interview late yesterday with NPR's "All Things Considered." "This is not the kind of tone any of us want to set when it comes to performing our constitutional responsibilities of advise and consent."
"I just don't think it's appropriate," he continued. "I certainly don't endorse it. I think it's wrong."

Cowards and scum.
Sotomayor belongs to La Raza which means “The Race” in Spanish, and the Republicans are the ones who are racists? God, what a bunch of gutless weasels they are.
could damage GOP prospects among women and the rapidly growing Hispanic population...
LOL! how do you get less than nothing?
Oh and what was it called when the dems never stopped attacking Estrada with everything but the kitchen sink?
This bigot is an insult to our Supreme Court. Both in intellect and in deed.
AND....Janice Rogers Brown....an African American? What did the Dems do to her????? HHHMMMMMMMMMMM!
Gutless weasels indeed. Needing a new party — courage of your convictions is the first qualification.
Sessions and Cornyn have lost their manhood.
not to mention Clarence Thomas.
For starters, what have they got to lose? They are personae non gratae. I guess invitations to cocktail parties is what they’ll lose.
Why is everyone dancing around this? Why is everyone dancing around capitalism? GM? The cushy deal that the unions got? There is so much to hit out of the ballpark.
I am vexed!
Oh, God help us! Does Republican actually mean COWARD in some language? I am so sick of these POS RINOs!!!!!!!

Since she is a member of La Raza she isn’t fit for any kind of public service!
Not only cowards and scum .. they are to moroninc to understand why nobody will vote for their sorry, wishy washy, spineles behinds. They are all a bunch of Richard Craniums as far as I am concerned.
Lead follow or get out of the way. I’m an old Iowa farmboy. Didn’t take me long to figure out what happens wehn you straddle a barbed wire fence. Your liable to hurt sumething important.
Oh ... oh .......oh ..... just realized sumptin. The jerks have “straddled” for so long that they “lost” their balls.
...and Alito.
Sad, the spate of stories (Session is a racist) that ran when Sessions took Specter place on the judiciary committee must have spooked him. As intended.
Our soldiers continue to run off the battlefield, who will be left?
Tone down Hell, I’ll call it like I see it!
R.I.P.G.O.P.
When Republicans decide that combating racism is racist, they cease having any purpose to exist.
Ever dealt with the La Raza bunch? Not a friendly group.
!

Cornyn is a POS RINO.
Geeze..!
Facts are now taboo under the RINO a-holes.
I hope the day has come that whenever we hear the GOP say things like “Tone it down,” we ramp it up. I am really SICK of these suckups. Helpless dimbulbs. PeeWee Herman has more huevos.
This whole article is a setup. Basically labeling the GOP as a bunch of racists with a few “moderates” sprinkled in. It’s almost as if they are playing right into the hands of the media.
Sadly, some of these buffoons need to wake up and think about what Chuck Schumer did to Estrada. Can we not get a gameplan?
Of course, Schumer didn’t have to defend his remarks to the media every 5 seconds, so it’s a little easier for him.
If the GOP rolls over on Sotomayor and doesn’t even try to fight, kiss them good bye, if you haven’t already.
Every move these moderates makes just drives another nail in the GOP coffin.
If they seek to be more like Democrats, why not imitate the attacks and strong opposition instead of the kissing up to Dems?
Turn Saul Alinsky’s tactics back on them!
Based on personal, first-hand experience I can say that the “hispanic” community is deeply divided by geographical origin and most groups detest the others. Having them act as a monolithic entity is possible but not likely. Many are pro-life traditional, religious lifestyle people. It’s not possible to generalize either way.
We need not fear standing up for principles that apply to every individual equally.
We cannot, in good conscience, vote to put a person with racist and provably unconstitutional view on the Supreme Court of the United States even if it means we lose the vote.
Period.
Cry babies.
Funny how pointing out racism in a liberal is itself “racially tinged.”
You got that right. I've tried to call his office all day and the phones are jammed with traffic. I'll never vote for another Republican.... EVER I hope a Hispanic runs against him, I will gladly vote against him to see a Hispanic send him packing.
GOP doing the rollover strategy that got the ‘Rats back in power. /S
WE ARE DOOMED! DOOMED, I TELL YOU. no one is listening. it like screaming in the wind, crying in the dark.
We have elected the ONE. Salvation has arrived. (melodramatic sarcastic rant-sorry)
Celebrate Racism, the new GOP motto!
Leave the racist Latina alone. She’s allowed to be a bigot.
Let’s just wait and see what happens.
I see three possibilities here.
1. This is liberal mediaspeak, hoping to shut down any coming criticism of Hussein’s choice before it gets a chance to come up. Senator Sessions, from one thread I’ve seen, is disturbed by some of Sonia’s remarks.
2. The RINOs really do believe caving on Sotomayor will help them with hispanics and women. They’re sincere but sincerely wrong.
3. A combo of both. A few RINOs are giving impetus to the liberals. This is most likely.
The myth of Hussein’s popularity is one of great exaggeration, one believed by Hussein and his cult and by the uninformed. Perpetuated by the high priests of Hussein’s inner circle and the LameStream Media, the myth of popularity is a balloon that needs to be burst. And the sooner the better.
Let’s not give up.
GOP Moves to Tone Down Criticism of Sotomayor
So the GOP is becoming the Dems and going against free speech, honesty integrity.
No wonder they lose every election
“racially tinged rhetoric”? You have got to be kidding. Sotomayor makes a blatantly racist statement, and it is “racially tinged” to criticize it? And now Sessions is joining Cornyn in this ridiculous attempt to censor perfectly legitimate criticism.
Does she have any kids? I just wonder. I’m not dissing folks without kids, but there’s always talk about the big perspective you get when you have kids. I have some, and I my experiences post are very different then pre-kids. Is that diplomatic enough?
Ah, I can still remember when Princeton had some good basketball teams, competetive football, some excellent wrestlers, and nothing to apologize for!
I think that the GOP needs to “tone down” its criticism of Americans.
I'm offended at your bigoted reference to her being "allowed." Your allowance of her bigotry presumes a patriarchal dominance over her racism, reducing it to mere allowed bigotry and thereby denying it the fullest expression of her natural, narrow-minded discriminatory hate-filled racial bias. You, and people like you, are the reason she was victimized into becoming a racist in the first place. You should be ashamed.
I'm "uneasy" that our "elected officials" are spending so much time being "uneasy" about what others, who aren't elected officials, are saying and doing rather than focusing on what THEY should be saying and doing.
This is only about Rush and Newt, rather than Sotomayor, if Republicans spend their time fulfilling the plans of the Dems and their cohorts in the media by responding to what everyone other than Sotomayor has said and done.
Hilarious. The racially-tinged rhetoric came from her.
The Pubes continue to disappoint. Are there any men of wisdom, resolve and stature left in the Republican party?
None that I can see.
Weaklings and cowards, unfit for office, who have a charge to protect our country, but because of dereliction, are party to destroying it.
I absolutely cannot believe I am witnessing the unraveling of my country before my very eyes.
My money goes ONLY and DIRECTLY to qualified candidates.
