PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his attorneys said in a press conference Monday that the U.S. Department of Justice and Homeland Security have an ulterior motive in their investigation into the sheriff's office.
Arpaio and his attorneys outlined their reasons for demanding an investigation into the two agencies for unethical conduct and improper political influence during the course of their investigation of Arpaio's illegal immigration enforcement policies.
"After serving with the DOJ for nearly 30 years as a ranking official with the DEA, it is almost painful to have to ask for this investigation," Arpaio says. "But I must take a stand. Every law enforcement agency the DOJ has investigated in the past has bowed down or rolled over to the federal government. This agency and this sheriff will not. Washington should not tell an elected sheriff how to conduct his law enforcement responsibilities."
Arpaio also said in a press release that the Obama administration is forcing the sheriff to bend on illegal immigration enforcement.
On March 10, the DOJ announced it was launching an investigation into Arpaio and his illegal immigration policies to see if he was racial profiling the Hispanic community.
Arpaio says since the investigation began, the DOJ investigators have lied to senior sheriff's office officials and engaged in an orchestrated scheme designed to acquire documents and witness testimony surreptitiously in order to discredit Arpaio and his office.

Sheriff Joe is a smart man who does his homework. My time in AZ from ‘85 to ‘97 showed a Sheriff transform and rule arrest and custody with common sense. The locals are still behind him I’m sure. I’ll bet 70% of those in tent city are behind him as well.

Problem with that is, Arpaio endorsed Napolitano when she reran for AZ Gov in our last election two and a half years ago. So no, we locals scratched our collective heads and said, "what the hell are you thinking, Joe??"
Now, she's coming back at him. He has held the line on upholding the laws on illegal immigration here, where during her entire time she looked the other way, made excuses, and now our state has run up the highest debt it ever has educating these illegal kids and providing them free health care . The witch got what she wanted from him (endorsement) and now it's coming back to haunt him.
