PHILADELPHIA — A U.S. court says a kindergartner's mother cannot read Scripture during show and tell, even if the Bible is the boy's favorite book.
Monday's ruling is a victory for the Marple Newtown School District in suburban Philadelphia.
The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says the school's decision does not violate First Amendment rights given the nonpublic nature of the classroom and the tender age of the children.

The ultimate crime and the ultimate sin is teaching children to hate. It causes all the trouble in the world without exception. It destroys cultures, sanity, peace, and all that is good. It perpetuates itself down the generations, and it is almost impossible to stop. May God have mercy on us.
To put this in perspective:
How would you feel if I said my kid’s favorite book was the Talmud or some other Jewish text (which it is), and I selected passages that excoriated polytheists like Christians as horrid heretics who corrupt the Torah, and fail to worship G-d?*
Or muslims who select the koran, and they read the passages that claim Jesus merely “swooned” and did not die and that Jews and Christians are the sons of apes and dogs?
Or the book of mormon that preaches that Christians are all wrong, that the “trinity” does not exist, but is three distinct people, and Mary had physical sex with some being to create Jesus?
Or perhaps read portions of the Protestant Bible that says Jesus had brothers and sisters, and Roman Catholics are all wet about Mary’s permanant virignity?
Or maybe even some Scientologist tract about Xenu and space aliens and mental implants?
This is a real problem. There is a concerted effort by violent muslim sects to seek converts, especially in US Prison. The efforts are well-funded by Gulf nations.
The muslim efforts focus now in black areas, with some considerable success (witness the recent convert who killed Army recruiters).
Opening the door to the goose, lets in the gander, too.
Ergo, this is a correct ruling.
* A foul position I do not take, but posit for the purpose of argument.
Religious persecution is under way in America and the wheat will be separated from the chaff. The church will survive, perhaps smaller but definitely stronger.
No. I anticipate an answer. If it were a Koran in question, and not a Bible, what would be the responses here at FR? Happy? Relieved? Outraged?
Hmmm, I wonder how this would have turned out if I had sued my school district for allowing a Muslim mother to come in to my daughter’s kindergarten class and read from the Quran, discuss Ramadan, give them gifts, write their names in Arabic and (my personal favorite) tell the kids that the best part of Christmas is the presents and parties, just like Ramadan.
I just happened to be in the classroom volunteering, or I would have never known about this happening, because the parents weren’t notified of this action. He changed the school policy so that no one was allowed to come in and discuss religion without parental consent and notification.
The ironic thing is that the Muslims always pulled their kids out of the parties at school. They had notice about things the school did that offended their religious principals, and were able to opt out. This Muslim woman and the school district obviously didn’t agree that Christians and Jews should be afforded the same respect.
This happened ten years ago, and it still makes me mad. But, if I had sued, I am sure it would have gone a different way since it would have been a Christian making the complaint.
Once again, you assume that she has the wherewithall to pay for attendance to a private school. Interesting that you know so much about her financial situation. It must be nice to be wealthy. Too bad you’ve lost touch with the rest of us and what it costs for us to live.
I don’t know what it costs in your neck of the woods, by in Houston, you have to have an additional $1000/month to send your kid to a Christian school.
Let’s not play that game. Everyone who wants to has the financial wherewithall to provide a Christian education to her children. In my neighborhood, for instance there are any number of separate, organized Christian school systems: Catholic, Lutheran (LCMS), Lutheran (ELCA) Southern Baptist, Amish, and a boatload of non-denominational. Every school offers tuition assistance (up to and including 100% assistance). Parents must make a basic value judgment: “is the new car (boat, snowmobile , girlfriend, etc.) more important than my child’s Christian education?”.
Whatever you say, cluless.

All of these churches allow as members only folks who can fork over $9,000 a year for tuition? Wow!

Public schools are no place for people to impose their religion (in which I lump the homosexual agenda).
Just stick to Reading, Writing, Arthmatic. Values and religion are for home.

I have thought long and hard about whether to have my child (my wife is 6 months along with our first) educated in or out of government school (My wife is a government school teacher, FYI). I believe that I will homeschool or send her to private school, but I do NOT agree that believers should so quickly abandon the government school system. Until a few decades ago it was not the hostile territory it is now and for us to just give it over for Satan to have full access to most of our country’s children (think Perretti’s Piercing The Darkness) cannot be the correct course of action if we have any hope of saving this country from falling headlong into an unstoppable moral decadence.
